i wonder if someone has a way of finding this out, or putting together a top ten list of the farthest into the season a dman has been the leading scorer

in recent memory, karlsson and brent burns have been among the league leaders well into the season, but i don’t remember either of them leading the league outright past the 20 game mark. i could certainly be wrong of course.

before them, what dmen would we even imagine could apply here? looks like coffey started fairly slow in 95. could potvin be possible?

Karlsson had almost as many points 19 games into the season last year, 28 vs 30. If not for McDavid's historical season he would have been tied for the league lead, just as how Quinn wouldn't be leading today if McDavid was his normal self. Also considering the Sharks PDO of 97.3 and 19.6% powerplay(at the time) vs the Canucks currently unstainable PDO of 105.1 and 30.99% powerplay, imo Karlsson's start was more impressive.

Still I'll give Quinn credit, it almost certainly is the most points by a defensemen 19 games into a seasons since Al MacInniss had 32 in 90-91

ok so what’s the deepest into the season two dmen have been #1 and 2 in pts?

edit: oh wait, nm, miller’s goal tonight keeps him one pt ahead of makar

Plus as far as I can tell he’s playing a really good defensive game doing it.

John Cullen #1 ahead of Gretzky and Darren Turcotte at 6th.....wow.

ok answering my own question

according to ray ferraro on his podcast, the dmen to ever lead the league after 20 games are bobby orr (5x), macinnis (once), and quinn hughes (before kucherov rang up his 6er last night)

would love to see actual numbers but there it is

makar is within range for now, so we might see a fourth guy at some pt in the next little bit… fun to watch him and quinn duel

edit: although i’m having trouble finding which macinnis season it would be, because it isn’t 1990, 91, or 92, at least not near the 20 game mark.

I was thinking there's no way Paul Coffey didn't do it, but looks like he didn't. Usually started "slow" and finished white hot.

The 1985-86 season from January 1 onwards.

82 points in 43 games to finish the season. 33 goals, good for third behind Bossy and Kurri. Wild.

i imagine it would be hard to find a stretch where coffey led the league, considering he was feeding outlets to and QBing a PP with gretzky and mario. but 95 would be the logical sweet spot.

here’s paul coffey tied with rookie forsberg for league lead from march 22 to the end of the lockout season—

very similar pace to hughes’ league-leading 31 pts in the first 20 games

kind of amazing to imagine what a peak 80s coffey could have accomplished in a league with no gretzky or mario…

I could see it for Coffey because I remember the Leafs' hot start in 2018 right after adding Tavares to the artillery. 18 games in and it's Morgan Rielly leading the team in scoring, because for him it's a breakout pass to Matthews, a breakout pass to Nylander, a breakout pass to Marner and they're all scoring (this did not continue). Swap that for the diverse array of all timers on the Oilers and it's not inconceivable at all. But of course if it didn't happen it didn't happen.
