@Harbour Dog any thought to changing this next year...I think maybe instead of it's current format you could divide the points into however many ppl select that player...encourages outside the box thinking instead of just picking panarin and the highest scorer on the other team.

That's a great idea! The current incentive isn't quite enough.
We'll obviously play this year out as is, but next year's iteration will have that idea integrated into it.

Another idea @Harbour Dog is to have a reserve player for every game that you choose... This player could sub in for any player selected by us who doesn't see any actual game time due to pregame injury, illness, etc.
It could even be as simple as the lowest jersey number to skate in the game..or the highest..or closest to 50 without going over or what not

Yeah, I like this too. Would save a lot of jockeying when guys are announced as late scratches. I'll probably institute this next game.
I'm also thinking for the last stretch of games (probably Game 70 onwards), I will disallow picking the exact same two selections as anybody who has already posted their guys. To make sure nobody (myself included) gets cute and tries to protect their position from the people below them, by matching them.

I don’t like this idea because then it becomes a contest to see who posts earliest. For example if I post early and take Panarin then everyone else has less incentive to take him because they get 1/2 or 1/3 points. Doesn’t really work unless it’s a secret ballot up until game time.
This rule also gives way too much incentive to being one of the first people to post in the thread.

I had considered, for the 70 game onward stretch, that I could also instead enforce the time limit much more strictly and with warnings as the deadline approaches, so that people can wait until the last 30 seconds or so to submit if they wish, to avoid having their picks copied. I'm not sure if the option I mentioned above might not be better for it though.
As for the idea that Inferno put forward; I haven't thought about how I would implement it yet, but you are probably right that a true split of the points would be too severe and strongly reward early posting. Perhaps something like points earned are decreased by one or two for every extra player that takes a guy. Or once you guess a player correctly, you can never guess them again.

This would require you to track everyone but how about a compromise where... Everytime you pick the same guy correctly you get 50% of the points or 75% or something... So it's depreciating for you individually to keep picking panarin or ovechkin.

I'm very much against the concept "first come, first serve" . Some of the stuff you guys talked about, will definitely benefit the guy voting chronologically first more ... not sure I'm cool with that.

I'm actually already tracking that, so it really wouldn't be much more work for me anyway. And I think some variation like this would be the best way to go. Puts everybody on an even playing field, regardless of how quickly you are able/forced to make your predictions.
