so dumb. the sea lion advances aggressively towards the girl once and the family lets her sit next to the water after they witnessed it acting aggressively. These are wild animals not little kittens smh.

the guy who recorded the video looks like the asian guy from mythbusters!!!

it was therefore all an act - they were trying to bust the myth of sea lions being agressive

Honestly though, does this guy really think that visiting tourists who have never seen a sea lion would know that it's capable of doing that? He's talking like a sea lion swimming up to the dock looking for food scraps is as obviously threatening as a grizzly bear.

I didn't think much of it either way, but I was rater amused how after they got the girl out of the water half the family just immediately fled the scene, like the thing was going to attack them again.

I'm inclined to agree, sea lions are cute critters and most people will have only ever seen them in captivity doing tricks like balancing a ball on their nose

You would not expect them to attack

But they are huge predators with very large teeth. The girl is very lucky. A growing number of people have no respect or simply no common sense when it comes to wildlife and get too close and that's when a bad things happen.

Exactly. Like the guy who wants to film himself living with wild grizzly bears, within feet of them... and then gets eaten by a bear. I mean... what did he expect? An apex predator in the wild to become his bestie? :shakehead

Seems like there's a growing mindset that all animals can be pets...and aren't going to ever act like wild animals.

Hell, my dogs occasionally act like wild animals. It's in their nature.

Again, sea lion safety is not common knowledge. They're not self-evidently dangerous like a snake or a wolf. Few city dwellers have ever encountered one in the wild. Why would a random tourist be expected to know that it's in a sea lion's nature to jump out of the water and try to carry off a person?

What I find interesting is that the head of the port authority, whose literal job it is to keep the public informed about safety at the harbor, didn't think it was necessary to post warning signs till after the attack. And in doing so, made disparaging remarks in the media about the victims of the attack who nearly lost their daughter. Perhaps if he wasn't wrongly assuming that this stuff was common knowledge, he wouldn't have to be talking about tourists nearly dying in his harbor.

yup. that was one of the first things stated in the interview with the port authority. there are signs posted and warnings, they have also added more and are considering posting it in different languages.

Unbelievably, last night there were about 100 people down there, mostly tourists, maybe some of them locals, picking up their kids and holding them over the water looking for the infamous sea lion," he told CBC News on Monday

"Sometimes you gotta give your head a shake," he added. "Steveston's going to become synonymous with the 'Jaws' theme pretty soon. You have a hungry animal and these people are dumb enough to feed it."

I swear people are becoming more ridiculous all the time.

And sea lion cubs do not know enough to avoid being clubbed and gaffed to death by humans? Guess they are out of luck.

How many previous incidents are on record of sea lions acting this way? Lafontaine Park Zoo in Montreal had sea lions - kids, supervised could feed them fish.

Common knowledge would include not sitting on the harbour edge in crowded circumstances. Just as likely to fall in or be pushed in by accident.
