RULES: Each poll will remain open for 2 days. In the case of a tie within the top 10, I'll create a 1-day runoff poll to decide the winner. Ties outside of the top 10 will be let stand as ties. For each additional poll, I will add the most commented next to add prospect.

ELIGIBILITY: All players whose rights are held by the Buffalo Sabres and who are eligible to win the Calder Trophy for the 2021-22 season are eligible inclusion. That means a prospect is eligible if--
  • He is under age 26 (as of September 15, 2021);
  • He has played no more than 25 games in any single preceding season; and
  • He has not played 6 or more games in each of any two or more preceding seasons.

Murray's the only guy on that list who's made it to the NHL, and shown he's a contributor in the A...

I know he's hilarious slowly, but a bottom 6 with size and pp front man ability beats the rest of the magic beans in jrs, and sadly, Pekar, who hasn't really found his game in the A.

Even setting aside Pekar, I'd put Cederqvist, Rousek, and Costantini all ahead of Murray tbh. Cederqvist is producing at a high level in the SHL at 21. Rousek also produced well in a men's league in Europe, though the injury is concerning. Costantini is producing at a high level as a freshman in the NCAA. I'd take any of the upsides represented there over a guy who tops out as a plodding 4th liner (how close he is to reaching that "upside" he is be damned).

In the "old days" I would have picked Brett Murray. It just seems like the Sabres identity (and much of the NHL now) is built on speed.

Rousek - would have been mid-teens if not for the injury concerns
Murray - Big and slow. Ceiling is worse Paul Gaustad?
Pekar - Plays a feisty game and seems to not have done much of anything else in the A. Looking like more of a project than many hoped.
Cederqvist - Third on his team in scoring with just over 0.5ppg (two leading scorers are both 29).

Costantini has 9 points in 11 games at sixth-ranked North Dakota as a freshman. I think that's more impressive than the others.

Cederqvist for me. How didn't Barnekow get a call. Wow, That's crazy town after looking up the eliteprospects. So for me:

20: Cederqvist
21: Constantini
22: Barnekow
23: Pekar
24: Rousek
25: Marjala

How anyone sees Murray as having a ceiling is clueless to me, he's a career AHL'er to me.

I would not have R2 at 12. Get he’s “proven” and all that but he’s proven pretty clearly to be a waiver wire level of player.

I value most of the guys ranked 13-19 over him…especially Laaksonen

I can see Murray replacing a Hayden spot. There's slower dudes in the league. Maybe not but wouldn't be a surprise. There's higher ceilings on the list and maybe spring brings some breakouts.

Barnekow Seems to be on the same path as Rosen. He put up huge numbers in the Sweden U20 league. Gets some SHL games but hasn’t put up a ton of points yet.

Barnekow‘s U20 stats are impressive.

Eh, Murray is really... really slow for the NHL. They don't have the speed on the 4th line to overcome having someone who is going to regularly be trailing the play or to cover for him when his check out paces him back up the ice.

I would love it if Micro-Maroon can get another step so that he would just be slow by NHL standards, at which point is willingness to work the wall, carry people to the net, and try to stick up for his teammates are all solid additions.

I guess I just want to root for him. Big dude with the right attitude, uses his size and made a conscious decision to put his all into being the best player he can be. It would be great if he can make it

I agree, it's been a great story to pull for him so far, going from Penn St. cast-off to an NHL deal and games in the pros. Now, to get him to stick is going to require even more work.

I know this is an early season ranking, and that's all it is meant to be, but I think we may need an emergency hf squad meeting to put Jack Quinn as #1. History will not look fond upon us if we do not rectify.

People knew what they could see. What we didn't know was how much his sports hernia, surgery, and recovery would shift things like how he played with it in the U20's, how it bothered him in Rochester last year and how the recovery slowed him during the rookie and regular camp.

What they are getting now is Quinn focused on hockey exclusively and healthy. It's a lot like his season with the 67's.

Also, now that we have a body of work for Levi at the NCAA level, he's going to move up a lot as well.

For as good as Quinn has been, I don't think Power has done anything to slip out of that #1 spot.
The fact that this is also entirely true makes me so happy. I haven't felt this way in a long long time if ever

Think if we were to re-do right now it would look something like:

Power
Quinn
Krebs
Peterka
Levi
UPL
Johnson/Samuelsson
