Toronto deals Franson; acquires Ott from Dallas

119528-steve-ott.jpg

The Toronto Maple Leafs got a little more difficult to play against Saturday, finalizing a deal that sends defenceman Cody Franson, along with Toronto's 3rd round selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, to the Dallas Stars in exchange for gritty forward Steve Ott, and the LA Kings 2nd round selection in the 2012 draft.

"We realized we needed more grit, and we had a surplus of defencemen. This deal made sense for all parties involved." Leafs GM TribalPhoenix stated in a press conference today.

"While Steve is a player who gest under the skin of the opposition, he's also a guy with offensive ability and can skate. He's a guy who can certainly play the game, and we're very happy to have him playing it wearing the blue and white."

The Canucks announce that they have dealt goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"It was a tough decision moving Roberto, but with Cory's emergence we felt now was the time to make the move. We feel Tampa is the ideal destination for Roberto. We thank him for all the years he put into this organization and being the consummate professional throughout this process. All the best to him in the rest of his career."

"In return we receive former Canuck Mattias Ohlund, who missed the previous season due to injury and is questionable going forward as well as prospect Vlad Namestnikov and the 10th overall pick in the upcoming entry draft."

"We are also very pleased to announce that we have re-signed Cory Schneider to a 3 year contract worth a total of $10.5M."

We will shop the 10th overall pick in an effort to acquire either another top 6 forward or top 4 d-man capable of playing the right side or move up in the draft.

Stars approve.

We realize we are taking a risk on Franson, as he seems to have taken a step back this past season in Toronto. We do, however, feel that he has all the tools to step in and be a force if placed in a more restricting system and that Dallas is the perfect fit for a player of his ilk. We look forward to watching him grow with the organization and are excited by the upside he brings into our lineup. We have also signed Cody to a 3 year deal that will pay him $6 million ($2 million/year).

The Stars would also like to pick up an above average 3rd line player, or young forward prospect with upside. Available pieces are Adam Pardy, Ryan Garbutt, Reilly Smith, Alex Guptil, DAL 2nd, DAL 3rd, DAL 4th (2012) DAL 2nd, DAL 3rd, MIN 3rd, DAL 4th (2013)

Devils Aquire Bernier in Swap with LA

D Slava Voynov
LAK 2nd 2013

I'm pretty happy with the way this deal turned out for us. Jonathan Bernier is going to get his chance to shine in New Jersey, and will usher in a new era between the pipes for the devils. From the beginning of talks with LA, I knew that I needed to have Voynov in Red and White aswell. I think he's got good game and will continue to play top 4 time in New Jersey. Both sides are taking risks here, but I think it will pay off for us in the end.

Los Angeles confirms this deal.

We're going to make every effort to get Parise in a Kings uni before the floodgates open, and we feel we can make that happen.

Jonathan Quick's performance this year makes Bernier expendable. Quick is our long-term solution in net, there's no doubt about that. We wish Bernier all the best in New Jersey.

Losing Voynov hurts, as he was just coming into his game, but we feel Tedenby can thrive with a change of scenery.
