Right now there’s like a 10% chance, ska would need to release him. But they realistically could send him to the MHL or VHL to win a championship there instead. Coach’s comments today are cryptic I dunno but the management and insiders in Montreal are expecting next year
Having him play in the MHL Playoffs would be cruel. They know he doesn't factor into any future organizational plans as of the moment so it's not like they are getting something out of it, other than I guess the prestige of their MHL team winning another championship...

I think SKA just doesn't want to do him any favors for not extending with them. We'll see what happens but yeah it really suck. I think if the Habs make it to the ecf his contract will be over by then, but that's a long shot.

Relax Habs fan, even if SKA doesn't release him until he contract ends, less than 2 months away.
Most of us would rather have Demidov in the lineup over Pezzetta or Roy or maybe even Newhook as we are likely to play our first home non-COVID playoff games since 2017. He could be one of those dark horse guys who gets us past round 1.

Plus three years on ELC might add quite a bit to his 8 year extension versus one and an extension next summer.

Wasn't there some talk of Scrotumberg being fired if he didn't make it past the 1st round? I hope for SKA fans' sake that it's true

Crazy to think about that you sent your teenage superstar and already teamleading scorer (RS and PO) to play in the VHL. Thats like letting Bedard or Celebrini play in the AHL PO after the NHL season ends... Imagine he get injured... Rotenberg showing againg he is an emotional child playing hockey manager.

I doubt Rotenberg is solely making this decision.

Getting ousted in the 1st round is a huge embarrassment for SKA. They likely wanna salvage the season with a VHL or MHL title.
Zavragin and Pleshkov were also sent down.

Nobody cares about the MHL and VHL. Their sole existence is to pave a path to pro hockey. No head coach would be stupid enough to risk his already established superstar prospect getting serously injured playing against some scrubs nobody ever heard of. But Demidov did not extend. So Rotenberg gives a shit.

Sadly, they don't care, since he won't remain with them.

If nobody cares why did Igor Larionov (Torpedo) send leading scorer Artamonov to VHL playoffs?
And dont forget SKA sent starting goalie Zavragin there as well, and he’s under contract for the next 2 years.

Teams want to win and are beefing up their lineups with eligible players. Demidov isnt some outlier.

Why isnt he playing the St.Petersburg City championship with his cousin too to complete the feel good story and SKAs uber dominance (everywhere where it doesn't matter)?

Zavragin is a goalie. And Artamonov not about to move to the NHL yet.

This would never happen if Russia would be allow to play at the WC.

So Demidov is sent to the VHL because he wants to go to the NHL, and Artamonov is sent to the VHL because he not about to move to the NHL yet. And Zavragin doesn’t count because he’s a goalie.

You’re all over the place.

The probability of a goalie getting injured is lower. In both cases you could argue the same, that the likelihood of a serouis injury is not worth letting them play there (cause there is already nothing to learn for them).

But the main diffrence is, they are both factually not days away of playing in the NHL and theoretically not yet ready for.

Demidov is ready and could already be on a plane to the NHL. Everything the VHL does for him at this stage of his career (besides maybe good memories playing a last time with his Bro) is an unnecessary risk of injury.

It's actually not complicated. And again we dont have this conversion if Russia participates at the WC.

If potential risk of injury was a factor, both Artamonov and Zavragin would NOT be sent down. Both will play huge roles for SKA/Torpedo next year.

To frame the situation as ‘evil SKA is punishing poor Demidov’ is sensationalism primarily spawned by sports media; mainly Montreal’s who want Demidov ASAP.
They willfully ignore that KHL teams send eligible players to VHL/MHL playoffs. This is nothing new, nor is Demidov an outlier. He being NHL ready is of no relevance.
People’s outrage over this reeks of unworldliness and entitlement.
