A few of us who were paying attention to Bob McKenzie's final ranking were surprised to see this Finnish overager ranked 56th overall. He played Finnish junior B during his first year eligible season before playing in Liiga this year with KalPa, scoring 3 goals and 7 points in 32 games.

This is the only video I could find of him.

Do any of our Finnish posters have a scouting report on him?

Big, bold and beautiful. When they called him up I didn't have any idea who he was and ended up playing 3rd line C in the FEL finals. Impressed me on his debut by driving fearlessly to the net. I think his upside could be third line center, since he doesn't have greatest puck skills, but once he fills his frame he should be beast front of the net.

Surprised by his size and that shot. :amazed: Wonder who will grab him? Seems like he'd be a great lottery ticket.

Seems like an interesting prospect, in that case. Maybe a target for that extra 3rd montreal has, since we have absolutely 0 center prospects whatsoever.

Scored a goal and an assist in his first CHL game of the season. Was a very impressive showing by him.

Already I can say that I'd be surprised if he's still playing in Liiga next season.

Good to hear. Was a bit worried after his terrible showing with the U20 NT last month.

Just shows again that summer tournaments really don't tell anything about players. Of course even the CHL games this early to the season might not tell very much either. But at least those games have some more meaning, so doing well in them and against men, is still a pretty good sign.

Another goal. Celebration + replay.

Too bad I didn't manage to capture the lead up to that. He got pushed to the boards almost head first, looked scary. Got up, scored immediately after.

We could've used his scoring. Oh well.
Yeh, too bad. I was looking forward to maybe getting to watching him play. I was sorry to see him scratched. Guess I'll have to wait for prospect camp next year now. Glad to hear he's doing well anyway.

Barely any talk of this kid. Had a good season in Liiga with 36 points in 54 points on a bad team(2nd best scorer after Texier).

Looked excelent vs NHLers in games against Canada and USA so far at the WC's.

Better than fellow Finn/Cane and ‘98-born Kuokkonen? Certainly having a better start to this season, though Kuokkonen has a really good year in the AHL last season along with some NHL games...

I think he has potential to be a very similar player to Roope Hintz. Large, fast and a good wrister.
I don't really see that. Hintz has miles better skating than Luostarinen and Hintz is clear top 6 material by his general skills. My only doubt with him in the past was with his soft attitude, which he has after all clearly improved significantly year by year.

I like Luostarinen too, but he seems more like a bottom 6 guy really. He might of course prove me wrong, and I couldn’t be happier if that will happen. His skating is ok, but not really special.

Hintz is one of the best bigger sized (6’3 or over) skaters in the NHL. Luostarinen is really nothing like that with his skating. Not even close to that. I don't see Luostarinen having either any other skills really on the level that Hintz has.

Too bad it is impossible for Luostarinen to improve in any area. Apparently.

I think you missed the word "potential" in my post.

He's going to play garbage minutes on their checking 4th line with Brock McGinn and Brian Gibbons. Kuokkonen isn't fit for that role.

Yeah, but even by potential I can’t see it really. Hintz and Luostarinen have only two years of age difference, and I don’t really see Luostarinen too close of the level in skating as Hintz was two years ago. I don’t really see it skillswise either.

Although that I do admit that his shot is pretty comparable with a two years younger Hintz, and maybe also his hockey IQ is at least comparably close, which is definitely in my opinion still the most important skill for hockey players. So maybe with very good development Luostarinen will be at least similar class of a player with point production, although I don't really see it at least so far.

But with skating and otherwise player type, I see absolutely no real similarities between them, and also no potential for Luostarinen to ever be the same class of a skater or similar way skilled with the puck. Because of these things I just don't see the point of comparing Luostarinen to exactly Hintz. Even by potential.

Yep. Also, he's stronger, more physical, a center, better along the boards and looks to be better defensively than Kuokkanen, so he won't "hurt" the team when he's out there. Kuokkanen has never impressed me much, because if he's not scoring, which he hasn't yet in his 11 NHL games, he's not adding much to the team.

Luostarinen, so far, has showed the coaches that they can trust him out there, which is a way to gain favor in future callups. Small sample size for sure, but he's doing the right things so far.
