My understanding is that exemption only covers two years or less of pro hockey, regardless of league. Under this scenario Tryamkin would not be exempt.

My understanding is when they say, "second year pro" they really mean two years of an NHL contract completed.

Tryamkin should be safe as next season will be his second on an NHL contract.

Otherwise Jesse Puljujarvi would be a "third year pro" by the end of next season.

Hutton played 1 game at the AHL Level on a PTO

His contract started last year. He will be a second year Pro

So he is ok .

He played 4 games for them and his contract was signed in 2015. I don't see how he is exempt unless there is some loophole I am missing, which is completely possible.

It wasn't a tryout. We signed him on March 16th, 2015. Any AHL games played afterwards count as pro hockey experience. He will have to be protected. Someone should tell Benning, he probably doesn't know.

Nope, it was a try out. His NHL contract didn't begin until this season.

It happens all the time with college players. They sign AHL try-outs with the farm team for the remainder of the season and their NHL contracts start the following season.

He counts. Played a few years in the KHL which is pro hockey. William Nylander is not exempt so anyone who has played as many or more pro seasons of hockey as him is not exempt.

I'd be really shocked if Hutton was not exempt. Playing a couple games in the AHL shouldn't qualify as a pro season under any definition. They'll probably, at least, be a games played cut-off or something.

I'm not sure if a PTO counts but Ben Hutton played four games of AHL hockey in the 2014-15 season on these dates:

April 1st - RCH @ UTI
April 7th - HAM @ UTI
April 11th - UTI @ BNG
April 12th - SYR @ UTI

Edit: And he signed his contract in March of that year which was a few weeks before the first game. I did forget he was on a PTO though so my bad there.

Even if Hutton is exempt losing Tryamkin would really suck. I don't think Benning has thought far ahead enough to even consider the expansion draft. He will hopefully be gone by then.

Hutton was on a PTO in Utica.

But pretty much every European plays professional hockey at age 17-18, so every 20-21 y/o Euro will need to be protected if they've only played 1-2 seasons.

I'd assume 'years of service' would be counted the same as for UFA status, which includes NA pro hockey under NHL contracts and that's it. It would get really confusing with tons of wormholes otherwise.

I'd be very surprised if U-20 games played by Europeans in Euro pro leagues were counted as seasons.

Again, the simplest and most logical way to do this is to do years of service exactly the same as how it's done for UFA status, arbitration, etc.

It makes no sense to be classifying a guy as a '3-year pro' or '4-year pro' by one definition and a '2-year pro' by another definition.

Sakic expects he'll be exempt from a 2017 expansion draft.

“We’re not going to burn a year, first of all. He will start next year,†Sakic said. “(Expansion rules) can change. It’s got to be negotiated, but in his first two years, he would be treated like a junior player.
