Rumor: Evans asking for $4M x 5 years

He's also the go to guy on the PK and when the team needs to protect a lead. He's also maintaining an above 50% faceoff percentage.
People will realize his importance the day he's gone. 3.5M$ for 5 years I don't hesitate and I sign.

Under 30 years old, Jake Evans is the best center available on the market this summer after Sam Bennett.

His comparable on capwages are Adam Lowry, Namestnikov and Lars Eller.

But you are omitting the entire reason that some top teams have no depth.....they grossly overpay their top players. Hughes has set the team up with potentially ridiculous steals with all of Slaf, Suzuki ,Guhle and Caufield. I wouldn't bet against him doing something similar with Hutson and Demidov as well. The entire premise that Hughes is working towards is one where he can actually pay middle/bottom sixers good money and have elite depth to go along with bargains at the top.

If Hughes doesn't spend it on third liners then the money/space will just be sitting there wasting away.

Top players who go after the max amount are selfish and don't deserve to win cups. The only thing they accomplish by pushing their salaries as high as they possibly can is to reduce their chances of winning and taking a piece of the pie from their teammates. It is amazing how few fans can even grasp this.

I think in this case, we are heavily underrating Armia. Take Armia away from Evans, see how that works.

Evans goes as Armia goes. When Armia is having a strong year, he has a strong year, when Armia is depressed, Evans has 2 goal seasons and can't generate anything to save his life.

Some of you people are stuck in the Bergevin era, hard.

If Evans is our 3rd line center, we are in trouble.

He flourished and improved and is a Habs pick, albeit a 7th rounder but he deserves his accolades and his raise. I'm reluctant to give a guy in the bottom of the lineup 5 years and $$$$, I feel giving bottom 6 players money and terms is how we got into this mess.

Kapanen, Hage, Beck , Xhekaj and others will needs spots to play and you can't put them into the 2nd line right away... even Suzuki and Danault started on the 4th line... Gallagher and Anderson will be here for at least another 2 years and we all know Heinemen is a keeper so...

Our PK will be worse with him gone and that can be a bit demoralizing for the team but acquire picks and make the team better next year and have a rookie on ELC fill in and grow...

When we'll be ready to compete, you can acquire guys like him or Travis Moyen for a dime a dozen...

He's playing well in his contract year but he also has an history of concussion. I understand that this is his time to cash in and if I were his agent I would also advise him agaisnt the home town discount or shorter contract, so if a team wants a better PK before the playoffs and are ready to pay, you have to move on from him. It's a cap league and we aren't at the stage of our rebuild to sign guys like that long term i don't believe.

Compared to other threads which rapidly devolve into cesspools

I'm seeing a ton of great arguments 'for' and a ton of good arguments 'against'
Like I'm in the 'no camp' for 4x5
But every couple of posts I make that 'hmm he makes a good point' face tho lol

I think sooner than we think financially we're going to NEED every penny we have to keep the entirety of this core together for a long while
But then I ALSO think like.. he's one of the best PKers in the entire league
And centers don't grow on trees..

It's a tough one for sure, I'll be very curious how HuGo handles THIS particular case

If Namestnikov(32 yo) can sign for 3M in Winnipeg for 2 years, then Jake Evans should be making 3M as well for a little bit longer.

It's definitely our most pressing need but at the same time unless its a trade, there isn't much available on the UFA market outside of Bennett and maybe Granlund.

We better keep Evans in case KH can't get another top6 center this summer.

Well, we have 500 draft picks and there will be players available at the deadline or in the summer and we don't need a superstar but we do need an upgrade. I think it's very doable.

Evans is not gifted offensively but does everything else well but the rumors have both sides far apart so we will see how it turns out.

I may be in the minority but I still want to wait on moving on from Dach. I think we need a second liner center as Dach ain't it but he could be a good winger.

For a 4C thats too much, for a 3C thats fine. His production as a 3C should be in that 10- 15 goal range but thats not what he usually produces. He is playing 3C minutes.

They are both silly contracts. One I thought was less but you corrected me based on percentage of the cap. You’re reading too much into it. You can’t overpay bottom 4th line players and expect to be successful, as was the case with Cizikas
 
People in this thread thinking Evans is a 3rd liner are wrong.
Evans is a 4th liner on a playoff team. Evans is not gonna have 2 3rd line wingers and 3rd line icetime on a playoff team.
Being good at killing penalties is not hard in the nhl. Evans is not a shutdown center on 5v5. Hes a pk Specialist and that's it. Learning to play PK isn't hard if you have a stick and above 50iq. Even Anderson learned to play PK and he was completely useless defensively when we acquired him.

Dach should be on 3rd line center and Beck on the fourth line next year.

I agree with everything except I don't think Dach is a center in any way. A 3rd line winger is more realistic for Dach.
