The Storyline
Turkiye, or Turkey, as many of us would call them, is entering its third consecutive Euros, having failed to leave the group stage in the two prior, although they did finish third in 2008, third place also being their result in the most recent World Cup they participated in, which was, admittedly, in 2002. Turkiye is suffering some injury issues, particularly to their backline, but performed well in qualifying, edging out Croatia to top their group. They also should have a decent level of fan support due to the large Turkish population in Germany.

Georgia will be participating in its first major tournament as an independent nation, having qualified via the playoffs, which it made due to its Nations League performance. In the playoffs, they knocked off Luxembourg before requiring penalties to eliminate Greece. Still, Georgia has some potential, led by the talismanic Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who already has 15 goals in only 30 caps. Still, it would be a surprise to see them exit the group stage, but stranger things have happened.

Portugal is one of the favorites in the tournament, and certainly are the favorite to make it out of the group. They won the Euros in 2016 after finishing third in 2012, although they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Belgium in 2020 and in the quarterfinals by Morocco at the 2022 World Cup. They combine a mix of old (looking at you Ronaldo and Pepe) and young (Neves, Silva, etc.) to form a very deep team that took the maximum points in a soft qualifying group, having conceded only two goals. They have, however, struggled in recent friendlies, most recently losing to Croatia after being defeated in March by Slovenia.

Czechia, another team known by its former name, the Czech Republic, finished second in its qualifying campaign behind Albania but ahead of Poland. They have never missed a Euros as an independent nation, and twice made the semi-finals, finishing in second in 96 and third in 04. However, more recently, they have failed to make it past the quarterfinals, having been knocked out there by Denmark after beating the Dutch in the Round of 16. Interestingly, they have only once qualified for the World Cup as an independent nation, failing to leave the group stage in 06.
