This may not be well received by some here, but Eugene Melnyk is good in my books. Before all the info came out about the Alfie situation I was livid with him and Brian Murray. I thought that they were at fault. However, this was before all of the information came out. Since then, I don't think they did ANYTHING wrong in handling the Alfie situation. Well maybe they didn't just come out and offer him $6M from the start, but that is not how negotiations go in pro sports.

People give Melnyk a hard time for him wanting the casino next to the arena, we're on a budget, or whatever they say. But the fact is he has never had trouble spending to the cap when needed, he has put tons of money into this team and city. He wants to build the casino to keep ticket prices low and to generate more revenue for the team. How is this a bad thing? I don't understand. And with the Alfie thing, he basically offered Alfie whatever he wanted, yet he still left. I don't see how you can blame Melnyk for that. It just seemed Alfie had moved on, wanted a cup. How can you blame Alfie either?

Melnyk basically saved this team all these years ago. I doubt he's having financial issues to the extent some may believe, or any at all for that matter. He said he's not going to sell this team.

What do some of you think of Melnyk? Why do some not like him?

No clue. Wish the general fanbase would get behind him and harass council to get that bloody casino up in Kanata. Stop screwing the guy around.

It would also create a ton of jobs and be actual competition to the only real casino in Quebec. No one in their right mind will go to to RCR.

I'm still iffy on the dude because I think he is taking money out of the team. HOWEVER he is also trying very hard to not raise ticket prices and generate more income so I'll take him over the Seattle Senators any day.

I think the fan experience at CTC today is largely the same fan experience it was 10 years ago. The food is a little better, the scoreboard is bigger.

So what has he really done to make the experience of going to a game more enjoyable ?

C'mon. For quite a few years he spent to the cap or very close to it and did it with some of the lowest ticket prices in the league. He has iced a competitive, well-run team for years.

This has gotta be a joke. :help:

How so ?

I am not talking about the on ice talent.

Just the experience of going to, watching, and leaving a game. How has that improved other than in the two areas i mentioned ?

I have been going to games since they have been at SBP, and I don't feel like things have been evolving in leaps and bounds from a fan experience perspective.

EDIT: Beer prices have gone up a ton, which is nice for prohibitionist fans I suppose.

Maybe that is more a failing of the Senators marketing / operations departments and not Melnyk really.

It is.

I'm not sure if I agree entirely, but I do see your point and do see where you're coming from. That all stems from Game Day Events and Operations. Don't think blame can really fall on the Euge for that.

I love EM. He might say some really dumb **** sometimes, and we all might be worried about his recent financial involvements, but he's one of the sole reasons we have our team still in Ottawa.

But there would be no off-ice experience at all if not for Melnyk.

What else do you want? I go to Senators games to watch hockey, i don't really care about what happens during the intermissions, between whistles or before the game.

He saved our franchise and is a reason that we have a team in the first place.

Most of the people complaining are ungrateful ****s who says "Melnyk should sell the franchise to someone who can spend money"

Newsflash people, no one is going to buy us. We don't make profits and that means it's not a viable business venture. Even without creative accounting and we might break even when we hit the playoffs, but that's not good enough of an investment. Any smart owner would stay the way **** away from us.

Melnyk is doing what he can to help us, and yet people are mad at his casino bid...like wtf why? All it does is bring good to our franchise.

“You can spend to the cap — it’s very easy. Any idiot can do that,” he explained. “The really elite teams are the ones that can (put in) elite management and elite coaching, that can put a competitive team on the ice year-after-year, and not have to buy that team.

“They can do it through internal growth. And that’s the sign of a really elite group. And that’s what we want to be.”

He said that and I absolutely agree.

Be glad we have a owner that cares about the team and is willing to battle day after day with our Pejorative Slured city council just so we would have a safer revenue stream tied with the Senators.

We could have Charles Wang who has said publicly that he would have not bought the Islanders if he knew how much work it would be.
