Bear's QO is 2.4 mil and he's arbitration eligible. Carolina has a lot of cap space, but they also have a lot of decisions to make. It's possible they choose not to QO him, but we'll see.

His RFA rights are probably is available for a mid round pick.
Even as a 7th or 8th we could use some more RHD.

Damn that’s a little high. Not sure the Devils would want him at that cap.

I like Bear, if he's cheap/free as a warm body to replace Subban on the 3rd pair then sure. But NJ already has several guys with similar skill sets and I think he would be redundant on this team.

Fitz has already said he wants to get bigger, tougher, and more mobile on the backend so I doubt Bear is the kind of guy he's looking for.

I'd rather sign a guy with a different skill set like Lyubushkin as UFA than give up an asset for a guy who doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

It was just revealed this morning that Bear had surgery on his foot at the end of the season, he’s still on crutches.

Now knowing that was the reason he was out for the playoffs, I wouldn’t put it past the Canes taking a flyer on him, cheaply, for one more season instead of trading him.

He never fully recovered from his COVID infection/isolation this year. He said he had some breathing issues (don't know if he said that in the past tense or if still lingering) and he also had "something removed" from his lower leg recently. All that said, he may have some lingering health issues.

Yeah basically he admitted he couldn't breathe during practice after his bout with COVID and didn't know if it was from being out of shape or long term effects of being infected. Said it lingered for the remainder of the season. So yeah, combined with his surgery this week, I'm really not sure there's much trade value for him right now.

Yeah, that and his QO are a bit high for how he has played this year. I could see him not being qualified very easily.

What happens now that Jake Gardiner has been cleared to play next season. Bear's QO is half of what Gardiner's cap hit is.

Which is a shame, I liked his play before he got sick. If he's be willing to sign a 1 year prove it deal with us to show that it really was COVID that wrecked him, I'd gladly have him back, as he was quite good with Slavin and helped us shelter TDA on the 3rd line. But outside of that, we're probably going another direction.

Worst case, we buy Gardiner out and eat the $1.5m cap hit for the next 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up shipping him out to a team looking to get to the floor, like an Arizona. Maybe as part of a package deal for Chychrun where he's included just to help balance out the cap?

Given the history of the current management and bad contracts, he either becomes our 3LD in place of Cole, or they move him for a similar bad contract that they are willing to take a chance on. The only contract this management group has bought out is Marleu's, and that was because they were paid to do so.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Carolina doesn’t qualify him, NJ should definitely look into signing him if they don’t, but I don’t know that they should trade anything for him.

If you're putting him on your third pairing you're going to hate him. He's a guy you play in your top 4 complementing your scoring line. Otherwise he gets buried.
