The old warrior has found another gear it seems. Contract 2.375M. UFA 2023. What will he get and will NJD resign him?

7gp 4g 2a 6p +1 FO 52.22% playoffs

Seems like there's mutual interest in Haula extending. Not sure if his market will have gotten much better than the last time he was UFA (summer 2021) plus the flat cap puts the squeeze on a depth guy like Haula. Seattle was looking for a faceoff ace since all of their centers were under 50%, but they probably need to keep a spot open for Shane Wright. Colorado has some center openings although that seems like a prime Jonathan Toews landing spot.

Ballpark top 3 centers around the league going into free agency:

ANA: Zegras-Strome-McTavish [+Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson]
CGY: Lindholm-Kadri-Backlund
EDM: McDavid-Draisaitl-McLeod
LAK: Kopitar-Danault-Vilardi
SJS: Hertl-Couture-Sturm
SEA: Beniers-Wennberg-Gourde
VAN: Pettersson-Miller-Raty?
VGK: Eichel-Karlsson-Roy

ARZ: Hayton-Boyd-McBain
CHI: ?-?-?
COL: MacKinnon-?-?
DAL: Hintz-Johnston-Seguin
MIN: JEE-Hartman-Gaudreau
NSH: Johansen-Novak-Glass
STL: Thomas-Schenn-? [Buchnevich experimented at center down the stretch?]
WPG: Scheifele-Dubois-Lowry

BOS: Bergeron?-Zacha-Coyle
BUF: Thompson-Cozens-Mittelstadt
DET: Larkin-Copp-?
FLO: Barkov-Bennett-Lundell
MON: Suzuki-Dach?-Dvorak
OTT: Stutzle-Norris-Pinto
TBL: Point-Cirelli-Paul
TOR: Matthews-Tavares-?

CAR: Aho-?-Kotkaniemi
CLB: Roslovic-Texier-Sillinger [+Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson]
NJD: Hughes-Hischier-?
NYI: Horvat/Barzal-Nelson-Pageau
NYR: Zibanejad-Trocheck-Chytil
PHI: Couturier?-Hayes-Laughton
PIT: Crosby-Malkin-Granlund/Carter/Poehling
WSH: Kuznetsov-Strome-Backstrom?

Maybe other teams could look at Haula as a LW who can take draws which he did for the majority of the season with Hughes. I could only imagine Haula might like some security after bouncing around seven teams in seven years. Maybe something 3 x 2.5 with New Jersey could work? Apparently his wife is close with Curtis Lazar's wife, so that might be a bonus in staying.

I thought he was Jersey best player in playoffs. Between him and Palat.

I think he'll want to come back, and the Devils are still going to need a 3C next year. Happy to have him back at a reasonable number, even with a little term if he wants some stability. Dudes a warrior.

Devils probably will try to keep him at like 4x2 or 3.5x3 etc, depends on if Haula wants another team in his resume.

I think he'd be a smart target for Buffalo if he makes it to UFA. We could use some forwards with above average defensive ability + a center who can reliably win a faceoff.

I was getting flashbacks to 2014 when I saw him and Kane engaged in a board battle last night.

I forget who it was…maybe Russo? Said they ran into Haula before the Devils played the Wild a month or so ago, and Haula had basically said he’s hoping he found a home in NJ. Makes total sense for a guy who just turned 32 and has been on 7 teams in 10 years. He’s fit with NJD like a glove. I don’t think he would be looking for any reason to leave unless the Devils lowball him. And I don’t see any reason NJD wouldn’t try to retain him with a reasonable offer.

I really hope Fitz can work something out and keep him around the young players. Great leader to have around

I think he'll be back. He's expressed interest in wanting to stick around one place (finally), and clearly he's the type that Fitz wanted to supplement this young core with and he's been very good and useful in that role.

I'd think a 2 year deal similar to the aav he currently has probably gets it done.

Yeah. It seems like some stability for a few years would be valuable to a guy who has bounced around a ton. He fits with the Devils as a bit of a utility guy who can move around the lineup as needed and shouldn't break the bank with a huge salary cap ask. Could very much see him extending at something close to his current salary, trading a few extra dollars for a little bit more term and stability.

Would make sense, as the market for those middle-tier utility forwards just isn't that strong in general these days. So it's unlikely he'd be getting serious cash thrown at him anywhere else.

Yep. Buffalo should be all over him if he makes it to UFA.

3:15 on moving. At least here he said he doesn't like moving from team to team and would like to make somewhere home for a longer period, in this case New Jersey.

Yeah, it was more of a joke about Haula being a bit of a journeyman.
