Hey Jets-natics,

I have to say that I'm pretty surprised to see the lack of love for O'Dell on these boards. I mean, I know there are people that like him enough, but I just thought there would be more excitement about him and more people penciling him in for a roster spot in the fall.

A few years ago (in my keeper league) I got Henrique at a reduced rate because his overall season stats didn't match the torrid production he put up in the last few months of the season. Late October rolls around and BAMMO, all the Devils fans are now Henrique fans. I was tracking Krug for my Bruins last year and predicted a big breakout because his stats in the last 2 months before the playoffs were insane... of course he showed in the NHL playoffs what he has to offer. This leads us to O'Dell...

certainly he has taken his time adjusting to the pro game but he was a late started I believe and spent a lot of time playing high level soccer as a kid --his vision and game-sense-IQ is pretty damned high-- and now he seems ready. When you look at his season (led the caps in scoring, almost PPG) it is pretty impressive, but if you look at the last few months he seems to be trending like Henrique and Krug before they proved they were very good NHL'ers.

Thoughts?

We're cautiously optimistic about Eric.
I think we're taking a wait-and-see approach but people have been speculating that he could be on the big squad this fall.

Yup he's definitely trending up, and is also eligible for waivers this fall. I doubt he'll be playing on the Ice Caps. Either on the Jets or we lose him. Doing some research - I've never seen him play personally - indicates that his skating could use some work.

I really like him and I am rooting for him.

I have personally had him pencilled into depth charts for months, but I don't know for sure how his transition will go.

Is his skating good enough? I hope so.

Thanks for the post

I think part of the muted response from our board could come from the fact most of us have not see him live yet. I am hoping he transitions and I am glad you made the post. He had a great year but he also snuck up on me a bit. I do know he was very popular with our St John's fans last year and was kind of a lone bright spot type in an otherwise dismal season for the Caps.

He's probably the one player right now I'd love to find out "insider information" on. No doubt he gets a shot at the big club this year if he has a decent camp and pre-season games. He may even keep Scheifele in the A because he's waiver exempt. If O'Dell doesn't work and Scheifele is pushing up, put O'Dell on waivers and cross your fingers. If he does work out keep Scheifele down in the AHL as injury replacement.

That's the way I'd deal with it, but in this kind of situation there's no clear correct choice. You simply have to pick between player development and asset management.

edit: This could also be the hardest choice Chevy has to make other than trade deals that come across his desk. He's never had such a full roster, the past two years in the off-season he's picking up other teams scraps and scouring the waiver wire in the fall. This year it could be the opposite.

I ran into him at a buddies place last night and he seemed pretty pumped about his chances with the big club this year. He was being humble about it, but the guy literally doubled every other player on St. John's goal totals last season!

He also just bought a house in Ottawa yesterday.

The construction's scheduled to be finished by next April...

Future Ottawa Senator maybe? :sarcasm:

I think the kid is from Ottawa, thus the reason buying there.

I would love to see him take the #3 centre spot, buy out Jokinen and give Selanne the 4.5 mil to join us for a swan song. One can only dream, right?

Thanks for this info Scotty

I am glad Eric is feeling confident it sounds like he showed up every game in St John's and I hope he kicks the door down in Winnipeg! Our roster could really use that type of break.

I agree with the OP. He's shown enough and we're in need of talent enough that I am penciling him in for the third line this season. I don't know whether it will be at centre, but hopefully he is flexile enough to play on the wing if needed. This is one player I would hate to see relegated to the 4th line.

The 3LW spot seems to wide open to me. Should be a battle between O'Dell, Halischuk and Tangradi.

He was in the top 10 of all AHL players for points per game. Several of the players ahead of him were called up eventually or were young NHL'ers like Eberle who were in the AHL during the lockout.
Pretty impressive considering O'Dell was on a pretty bad team.

I didn't get to see much of the Jets this season but what exactly does Tangradi do? He has 9 points and only 2 goals in 81 games over 4 seasons.

Is he really strong defensively or something? I can't imagine actually wanting him on my 3rd line...

The buyout window is closed.

I would love to see him kick the door down this year, but I would understand them giving him another year to round out his two way game.

His numbers were impressive, but here are plenty of kids who can't take the next step. Hopefully his foot speed can be improved.

to be fair.... no one on our thrid line could score this year. actually, no one besides our top line and Evander Kane could score this year.

Tangradi seemed to find his groove bulling the puck into the ozone, chipping it deep, or and working a long the boards.

He's got good posession numbers, and his play "looked" like that to me, but its important to note that he's spent most of his games on the same line as Evgeni Malkin or Alex Burmistrov, who are both Posession whiz's. We'll get the final story on "the real eric tangradi" this year, IMO.

Loved O'dell, really one of about 3 go to guys for the Caps last year, gave it everything he had all the way to the final buzzer. With that being said, you guys take schief and let us have O'dell :handclap: please?:sarcasm:

We can still by Jokinen out can we not? Last year of his contract. It doesn't need to be a compliance buyout. As soon as he's cleared medically we could buy him out.
Is that right? I thought it was the special "compliance buyouts" that were timed out
But I think Jolker will show up this year. He's always taken time to find his chemistry after trade/signing in a new city.

Nope. Even for the regular buyouts there is a certain period of time that it must be done in.
