As a Lightning fan, I just couldn't stomach that player being the highest-paid guy on the team. TB is also in a bit of a unique position where the top-end talent is all strong and locked in for multiple years to come but JBB needs to fill in the gaps/depth underneath them. Even if the team was cap-compliant with Pettersson somehow, they would be missing depth wingers and maybe a third-pair defenseman. For those reasons, I would probably pass on him, but there aren't that many teams that should pass on getting a player with his talent for free.

Now, if I was allowed to try to flip him to another team for literally any draft pick in the top three rounds or a decent prospect/cheap young guy/change of scenery candidate, I'd gladly do that.

Might be a good fit for a small market team that has trouble attracting free agents.

Teams who need a #1C and have a ton of cap space would take him for free. He has some value. How much? Doesn't matter as long as Vancouver isn't interested in moving him.

Buffalo says "One free EP40? Why yes please." in about a nanosecond. Especially given that there were HEAVY rumors that Cozens AND Byram were once on the table for him.

Of course lol

I'd trade a couple of assets to get him, in fact

EP would solve our one big hole in line-up (2nd C)

I'd start with 2025 1st unrestricted + 2025 1st from Calgary or Florida (whatever we get from the Monahan Trade), and add from there
....But then you have a 11.7 M player centering your second line and it doesn't make any f***ing sense.

Yes from Pittsburgh.

Honestly about 25 ish teams would say yes.

He's worth more than future considerations. The other 6 teams would say no because the cap wouldn't work

A lot of Canucks fans seem to think Elias Pettersson holds trade value, even with that Goliath contract kicking in. I'm not so sure about that.

So non Canucks fans, would you take Elias Pettersson right now be your #1C or #2C at 11.6m for 8 years? Absolutely free.

It's a risky contract. But, with the cap going up its a risk teams would be willing to take.

Now, would they pay up the nose to take that risk? I suspect not. But, you overreached here.

What the f*** is going on.

No. He's a Canuck for the next 8 years and when he bounces back from an off-season of legitimate/appropriate patellar tendon loading, all these ridiculous threads will look more ridiculous.

The team just traded Miller. Why would they trade Petey? To sign all the 1C's in the off-season? To draft a potential 1C 15th overall that may play in 3-4 seasons from now?

Vancouver need to retain salary of course. What's this about
No, a team with a fluid cap situation would take him. The Buffalo example above is a good one. If a team needed to shed some cap they could do it, get a couple of picks out of it, and the trade would end up feeling like a three-way. Canucks get nothing, except for space. New Pettersson team (we'll pretend Buffalo) gets Pettersson+picks. Team three gets a couple Buffalo players in exchange for picks.
