Steve Nazro retires after 50 years at the Boston Garden
An annual hockey tournament that features Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, and Northeastern University, the Beanpot has been played at the Garden since 1953. Nazro first attended the event as a student at Dartmouth, and was captivated that so many people came to watch college hockey. When he ended up working at the Garden, the Beanpot was one of his first major responsibilities.
“I took it upon myself to make sure that everything was done as best I could,†he said.
He became great friends with the hockey coaches, relationships that provided some of his fondest memories from his career. So it was fitting that, as Nazro recalled some of his favorite times with the tournament, Latimer unveiled the new name of the tournament’s MVP award.
“The Steve Nazro Award,†Latimer said, her voice wavering with emotion.
Nazro’s jaw dropped. His hands covered his mouth in shock, and his eyes began to water.
“I’m truly honored,†he said as he was handed one of the new awards. “That’s a very, very nice thing to do.€
