You never know, Austin might have gotten used to short seasons with very little playoff runs getting in the way of living the good life. If so Arizona would be a ideal place, hometo hero comes home to empty the coffers……..

Why do I get the feeling Matthews will be looking at $13M+, regardless of this past season? Not sure I'd throw the C on him if Tavares was stripped and Rielly refused.

if he wants 13+ he can play for another team. We need to builld the team that can win; if we keep teh same cap composition playing a lot of money to a few individual players who jsut ghost in the playoffs we are gonna be screwed.

in terms of captaincy my preference was always Rielly, if Mo refused it then by default it will be Matthews because there isn't anyone else that is worthy (assuming Matthews signs for 12 AAV for 8 years). Tavares just isn't it. And I don't see anyone else capable of it. Marner is not even worthy of "A" or the maple leaf logo IMO; Nylander is not "C" material. There is just no one else

McDavid for Matthews+ is very possible, but they would want a signed Matthews to make it work. Otherwise they wouldn't.

But is there anyone out there available worthy of that cost this off-season?

If not, then do you consider futures? See if there's an overpayment of picks/prospects?

People have talked about Matthews/LA, but Marner in a package for someone like Kempe (signed 4 more years 6.7) could be a viable option. Brings more size, brings speed and goal scoring as well.

I would guess there’s a risk factor in Matthews getting too fancy and complicated with his ask as well, or to drag it out into next season. He’s on a down regular season and playoffs and another down year or injury will put a dent in his asking price.

Even if Matthews dragged it out and score 130 points next season I'd still not be comfortable giving him anything more than 12 AAV.

We can't be giving such huge cap hits to a few players who have history of ghosting in big moments in the playoffs when our goal is to win the cup.

If MLSE just wants to make playoffs and make money and don't care about the cup(s) then I guess I don't know...

Marner to Dallas could be interesting if they wanted more finesse. They seem to have big bodies at every position and just the flavour Toronto could have more of.

Marner is a hometown kid, who loves playing for his Leafs. I wonder if it's too much pressure for him though...... The history, the lack of success, him being from To..... He's one hell of a hockey player, offensively, defensively... one of the elite in the league really.... But, he just hasn't done it for us in the playoffs... (he isn't the only one though)

But we would be lacking in a puck distributor if he's moved...

He lives off of space and is a dynamic play maker in the regular season. Come the playoffs, that space is very limited and the toughness is elevated thus why his production takes a hit. There's a body of work of 5 years. The Leafs should shop him to see what's out there.
