Was there any confirmation as to whether Pettersson still had the knee injury during the season? Was kind of hoping this was the case as it could at least explain his play. Not really a big fan of the whole poor training in the off season caused him to suck six months later.
makes me dislike it even more tbh. i hope he understands the importance of offseason training now because the canucks have now lost two seasons because of his poor play. and the more i think about it, the more i don't think any of this miller stuff happens if ep40 is performing up to par.

I'm only going by Vector's recaps so maybe I'm missing some nuance or tone but I'm fine with those Pettersson answers.

He's open to staying and working with the team a bit and then going to Sweden. I don't know if anyone expecting him to stay the whole off season if that's really realistic. But if he gets a plan from the team and builds on it in Sweden that's fine.

Sometimes 'reading between the lines' tells you more than the actual comments. And Rick Tocchet's comment that "EP40 needs to train better' is such a damning indictment.

I mean the guy was heading into a year where he was set to be one of the highest paid forwards in hockey, "and he has to train better"? I mean seriously? Not much wonder Pettersson and Miller were like 'oil and water' in the dressing-room.

I'm starting to get a real bad feeling about this $11.7m contract. Some players take their careers to the next level after signing a mega-deal, that sets them up for life. But other players, whether it's psychological or physical, go into something of a 'drift mode'.

One thing is certain. EP40 goes into next season with probably the most of prove of any player in the entire NHL. And he's going to have to climb out of a big hole with the fans in this market.

He needs to play like he did when he first broke into the league and Datsyuk comparisons were thrown around. It wasn't just instinctual for him but work ethic and pace.

Those two things are instinctual. I’d argue.

ts funny everyone sees hockey as a thinking game, I always have seen it as a feel game. What does the play need, what way is everyone leaning, where are the most open spaces?

I think you can think too much and it just drags you down pace wise. The guys out there thinking every play usually look f***ing lost.

Did I miss something?

I’d look more into him saying ‘he’s going to look into wether or not they need to add to the coaching staff and that he doesn’t know if the part time coach thing works’ as the only hint of what’s to come with his coaching future in Vancouver.

Truth is nobody knows ... can interpret it how you want.

Yeah…what the hell? The entire time he talked it was like he already was committed to being the team’s coach.

It just gets a little weird when you start reading into every little detail like that…

Tocchet Wore Black At His Season Ending Presser; Is he done in Vancouver?’

I mean I can even give you that perhaps the fact he wasn’t seated with Allvin and Rutherford is potentially something to read into….

…but, ‘he spoke first’ is a sign of a potential problem???

To me, that just really makes it seem like someone is reaching for a story.

Second year he's talked about finding more to generate offense. At least he knows it's an issue.

With how poorly the defense was constructed, I don't think Tocchet ever got a chance to change towards a more offensive system like they talked about last off season. Hopefully, he's learned to stay out of pushing the team to sign specific reclamation projects.

Yeah. I didn't get their impression whatsoever. Tocchet made it sound like he had every intention of staying and was already thinking about coaching changes. Strange to spin that as him wanting to leave.

Drance used an example of a gm not talking with the president and being fired shortly after as his example too. (Dubas and Shanahan.)

Maybe he spoke first because he wanted to get out of town. Who knows.

The ‘reading between the lines’ has been the issue all season…

The coach, GM and President don’t all talk about the player and his season long issues the way they did this past season if they believed injuries and injuries alone were the reason he was struggling.

The GM and President of the team each came out and publicly lambasted the kid. That doesn’t happen if it was all 100% related to a knee injury.

Dakota Joshua struggled this season. No one called him out on it. The reason for that was that the coaching staff and management knew he had a legit reason to be behind the 8-ball.

You can choose to believe it’s a conspiracy by management against the guy they just signed to a long term 11.6 million contract (which would make zero sense), or you can ask yourself ‘what do they know about his past training habits and the actual medical situation regarding his knee that I don’t know?’

I’m not here to start an argument about EP40 vs JTM or any of that other shit…

…I’m just a Canucks fan.
The very best thing for my favorite team, and yours, is that EP40 return to playing the game of hockey the way we know he can.
We are a very good team again if EP40 plays like he can next season…
That alone makes me an EP40 supporter.

That means we all need to be on team EP40 (at least for now) this summer.

…if the only good thing to come out of this season is that EP40 just realized he has to show up to camp in incredible shape every year going forward maybe in some small way there is something good that comes out of it.

EP40 is turns 27 in the first month of the 2025-26 season. If he's just realizing 'now' that he has to show up to camp in incredible shape' , then we're in more trouble than even I imagined.

And Tocchet is 'old-school' It probably seriously grates on him when his highest paid player-- for whatever reason-- isn't in the best shape of his life, at the start of camp.

Everybody's still focused on the Miller-Pettersson imbroglio. But I'm beginning to seriously wonder whether Tocchet--assuming he returns--doesn't reach the same 'fork in the road' with Pettersson as Miller clearly did.

I don't disagree. I don't care to get into an discussion over thinking vs feeling either. I think mind and body are connected and there are aspects of the game where it's more thinking than feeling and vice versa.

Anyhow, I just think getting Petey to move his feet and play with the type of pace we saw him play with when he first broke into the league can be taught and he can get back to doing that. I'm not talking about being caught flatfooted or overthinking things when he has the puck.

I think Tocchet talks a lot about this as well. Petey is expected to have the mindset to want to be the leader and take over games. He doesn't have to take charge in the locker room but on the ice he needs to especially since Petey keeps talking about wanting to be the one of the best. That's been kind of the criticism we've laid on him. He's been largely underwhelming throughout his career when he faces off against the league's top Cs.

You’re preaching to the choir here my man…

It’s very troubling that we’ve committed the money to him that we have and it doesn’t come with the same off ice preparation we’ve come to expect with most of the star players we’ve seen in this city (Daniel, Hank, Linden, Bieksa, Kesler, Hughes, and even JTM)…

…but the issue is that we have committed that time and money to EP40 so we can sit and gripe about it endlessly, or pray someone is willing to trade for him at peak value (not happening) or more realistically hope that shear humiliation alone will make him show up at camp in much better shape.

He did turn some heads by showing up at the previous camp (when he was playing for a contract) in good shape. So it’s not like it’s completely foreign to him.

The problem is even if he shows up in good shape, with the season he just had and the way the season before finished, he will be on a really short leash with the fans and media, so if he gets off to a slow start, or has to deal with an injury, he doesn’t seem to have the mental makeup to overcome that with the pressure that will be on him.

Edit: also to add Tocchet did emphasize ‘he loves the kid’ when asked about EP40’s character.
