  • Exit meetings with players are 15 minutes; they are more of a follow-up; what went well and didn’t; how to improve
  • Not the season you want Canucks
  • Needs to evaluate how to improve as a coach
  • Wants to be back for next season but there’s a process they have to go through; hasn’t taken a breath and thought about it
  • Has been approached by Hockey Canada but declined the offer
  • Their defence took a hit for stretches, early in the season; takes responsibility for the players that “didn’t pan out”
  • Centre situation hampered the team a little bit
  • No excuses for the lack of offense and needs to look at a different way to generate offence
  • Elias Pettersson, forward, wants to be a great player; his preparation has to get better; got behind the 8-ball early and could never gain traction; has to move his feet, shoot the puck, and change angles; needs to practice better; thinks he will do what he needs to do to get better; not sure who he’s training with; who and how he trains in the offseason needs to change; take inspiration from his teammates
  • Myers trains really hard and had a great year
  • Sherwood shot a million pucks over last summer
  • Evaluating himself in many aspects
  • at they can handle adversity better; important to change a little bit during adversity
  • Had more meetings in his life this year than before
  • Sometimes struggles with if he should have done something different when having meetings
  • Possibility of an addition to the coaching staff; not sure the part-time role is working; messaging might have to be a little different; the buy-in has to be better and that falls on him; Yogi is their powerplay coach
  • Training camp wasn’t as good as the year before
  • Didn’t go the hard route to lock a game down
  • Has talked to Pettersson, forward, all season about certain things and he’s evolving as a person and a player; hopefully he continues to evolve; lots of expectations and pressure on him; must prepare to deal with the pressure
  • Told Pettersson that they need to meet in the middle
  • There was stuff between Pettersson and Miller before he got there; never thought the smoldering would turn up; got uncomfortable and had a lot of meetings; tried everything and it just didn’t work out
  • Centre position is vital and need to strengthen it
  • Has an unreal working relationship with Allvin
  • Can win with Elias Pettersson as a centrepiece; has coached all different types and doesn’t like saying Pettersson isn’t his type of player; is a great kid and has a lot of time for him; is a shy kid; has a letter on his chest for a reason; would like to see him take his leadership role a little bit further
  • Is very lucky to have Hughes; 50 game stretch where he was the best player in the league; is obsessed with improving his game, being a better leader, and getting the team back in the playoffs; is already thinking about his training; not sure he’s thinking about his contract

Not sure how many more year end pressers we can hear this about Pettersson. I’d imagine Pettersson or Tochett is gone by end of next season if Pettersson’s play doesn’t turn around.

Boeser
  • Wishes they weren’t sitting here right now; need to close that book and move on
  • Was a rollercoaster of a year and were banged up with injuries; within all that noise, wished they squashed the noise earlier; let the noise creep into the room
  • Being a Canuck, being in the city, and all the relationships you make, and this place just started feeling like home; his girlfriend from here
  • If this is the end, he’s sure he’ll be back a lot and Vancouver will always be home to him
  • Last year was so fun; most fun he’s had in his career; will play a big part in his future decisions
Hughes
  • Focus on building a winning team
  • Were some challenging times but everyone has to be better; need guys that elevate their game; not about one guy but it’s 24 guys on a roster; everyone should be held accountable
  • A lot of unforeseen things happened this year and only had two guys play the full season; bunch of different things came together but the reality is they need to be better; every person needs to be better in the organization
  • Using the summer to get his body to play a full season, playoffs, and Olympics
  • Doesn’t think there’s a role he can play in training with Pettersson; every player needs to train the way they want to; is a big believer in him
Demko
  • Was a frustrating year, mentally and physically; came off his 2nd injury going in a good direction; excited to be healthy going into the summer
  • Don’t see himself as a different guy; knows he’s still capable of being a Vezina nominee; had no idea what was going on last summer
  • Has a team around him that builds his plan
  • Always wanted to be a Canuck and would like to sign an extension; will let his agent focus on contract talks
  • Lankinen deserved every dollar he got; kept us alive; is a great goalie partner; doesn’t change how he feels coming back here; really healthy relationship
Suter
  • Felt he could score 20 goals in the NHL
  • Wants to sign a contract earlier than August this time
  • Organization knows where they stand

I always like hearing who the guys are that train the hardest…

…in this case he singled out Tyler Myers, Quinn Hughes and Kiefer Sherwood.

There have been rumblings forever about EP40’s summer training. I really hope this season is the kick in the butt he needs to make a lasting change (I did hear that he showed up in good shape for the ‘23-‘24 season as he looked to sign his big deal so we know he has it in him).

I also thought the ‘I don’t know how the part time coaching thing is working out’ (I too presumed it referred to Gonchar) was somewhat telling.

He was fairly upfront and honest about the JTM and EP40 stuff, and about EP40 (needs to train harder in the off-season and change how he trains and also said he had to practice better).

Boeser’s comments that they needed to shut the noise down early and address it reflects poorly on our leadership, starting with Hughes.

Garland
  • Disappointing season and will take the time to reflect on it
  • Has answered the Tocchet question about a million times; means a lot to him as a person and a coach; one of the major reasons he was able to take a jump in his play
  • Extension talks are up to his agent; signed for a reason and has one more; loves Vancouver
  • Will play in the World Championships
DeBrusk
  • Came to Vancouver to try and help win
  • Was an okay season for him; was only scoring in front of the net and didn’t score enough rush goals; his game wasn’t where it needed to be; could have done a better job of playing his game instead of waiting for it to come to him
Myers
  • Has been a lot of roster turnover has made it a bit difficult to develop consistency
  • A lot of parity in the league; anyone can beat anyone; tells him how quickly things can change; every team is striving to be a contender
  • Can’t look too far ahead in the future
  • No denying that it was a tough year; a lot of different things went on and at times it was difficult to handle; was encouraging the way guys handled some of the adversity; doesn’t like to dwell on the negatives
  • Hasn’t been invited to the World Championships yet
  • Once the defensive corps changes were made, it become stable; loves where it’s at and are all on the same page
  • Start getting to a certain age and get more frustrated at missing playoffs because there are less opportunities
Hronek
  • Always tough to deal with a mid-season injury; everyone wants to play

Myers is aging like wine; played great this season, and always gives intelligent answers.

People like to dump on the guy but from all accounts from coaching staff and his teammates he's beloved in the dressing room and is one of their leaders.

Re: All the noise in the dressing room. Seems like management needs to add a few veteran stabilizing players like Cole. I think losing him was a huge blow to the leadership group.

Pettersson (Forward)
  • Oblique injury that took longer than expected
  • Has great resources here and in Sweden; will stay for a little bit to do some extra work before heading back to Sweden
  • His play wasn’t up to his standard
  • Neither he nor Miller could prepare for how that blew up; became the focal point; weren’t the best of friends but respected each other as teammates
  • Needs to increase his strength and doesn’t come easy for him; didn’t get the best genetics from his parents (jokingly); knee injury stopped his training last summer; going to take this time to get an extra month of training
  • Still needs to play on instinct; had the wrong mindset early in the season and tried to do more; is not perfect but is trying to be
  • Not sure why they couldn’t get to the slot; mentions lack of chemistry with defencemen but doesn’t have a confident answer
  • Doesn’t have an exact answer why his shot rate has fallen off but will definitely work at it
  • Tocchet is great and is a great leader; teaches him a lot
  • Hockey, and life, always has its ups and downs; going to turn it around
Lankinen
  • Fortunate to get an opportunity here and how everything worked out for him
  • Will not play at World Championships; focusing on rest and recovery
Pettersson (Marcus)
  • Can’t speak on what transpired before he arrived but felt it was a locker room that wants to win
  • Has a very young group that can learn a lot from this year
Sherwood
  • As players, you go about your business and take it day-by-day
  • Faced so much stuff this year and are still right on the brink of the playoffs
  • Fire in their bellies will get bigger over the summer
