Replace Rantanen with Marner in the game and I doubt you see a different outcome in game 7. You can't put the performance on one or two players. The whole team sucked in game 7. Everyone.

Marner still outproduced guys like Barkov, Tkachuk, Reinhardt, etc. So I don't really understand the 'can't perform in the playoffs' thing. We lost 6-1. Everyone played like shit. You could argue his cap space can be better used on depth, and I think there could be validity to that - our bottom 6 was nowhere near as productive as Florida's.

My comments on Rielly relate more to his performance through the regular and postseason. He just feels like an anchor on the backend at this point. But certainly not the only change I'd make.

Luckily captain idiot didn’t sign a long term deal, not much luck falls into the Leafs lap, but that was a huge one. I want both those chumps gone but it sure would be nice to get something back in return.

I don’t blame Marner for not waiving when he and his wife were about to have a baby. I can see Matthews refusing to go to Robidas Island and giving them cap relief.

Let him walk, take his best friend with him. The team might not make the playoffs but making the playoffs isn't enough. The goal is to win a Stanley Cup. These guys have been together for 9 seasons and haven't improved at all come playoff time. In fact they disappear more often than not.

Nothing in the farm system and not much on the NHL roster either. As of today, all they need is everything other than Knies at 1 LW and maybe Stolarz at 1 G and Woll at 2G.
Everyone else should be considered moveable and they should look at every opportunity.

If they had a complete roster they still would have made the playoffs. MLSE is biggest advocate for the salary cap and were always going to spend to the max, so Dubas and Shanahan cost them a lot of money with their cap allocations and wasted LTIR just to make the playoffs.

You're not getting it. This has nothing to do with Leafs and Oilers as teams but the comparison of their top players. McDavid and Draisaitl constantly win puck battles and lead the Oilers in scoring in the playoffs.

Mathews and Marner rarely win puck battles and disappear come playoff time.

This is why we should ask Matthews/Nylander and Reilly to waive or pick teams they would be willing to move too.
That way we can gauge the returns and have alternate rebuild plans. Instead of Marner leaving this summer and Matthew’s saying bye in 3 years both with nothing to show.

You still need your top players to perform to win a cup. While the Oilers duo haven't won a cup, they lead the team in scoring every playoffs and have got them to a game 7 in the Cup Final.
