I mean, no offense to Ayres who had a dream day and saved everything that came at him in the 3rd period for a Carolina win . . .

BUT . . .

1st) the fee paid to the goalie should be like 5k minimum. Make a dent in the emergency backup's bank account for goodness sake. Make him actually feel like a third string player for a day. A coach gets fined 10k for mouthing off a ref, and fines anything below that are almost unheard of.

2nd) it's a pretty small consideration to make for 40 home games a year. You'd think a minor pro player, NCAA, junior player or something could be put on retainer from a list of available goalies. You'd think even in areas where hockey doesn't have much of a tradition you'd be able to meet sort of a minimum criteria - and again, no offense to Ayres. Heck, the league could even fly in emergency backup's for one game a year and they get an official NHL contract to sit in the position should they be needed - which very rarely actually happens.

I'd have reason to be unhappy if my team got blitzed by a home squad because a beer league goalie (trying his darndest) let in a bunch of goals that even a minor leaguer would stop. That didn't happen last night, but just saying.

Using an EBUG is such an unusual happening that I think it should stay exactly as it is save for an increase in compensation. I'd say pay them whatever amounts to an NHL minimum contract (approximately 3k /day) for that day if they are used.

It adds a quirkiness to the game that creates memories. This game will be remembered for a long time. Had Ayers not been used, it would have gone down the memory hole in 2 days.

They also get to attend all home games free I'm assuming as part of the job. But I agree, should make a substantial dent in their bank account. He's a 42 year old zamboni driver, but a lot of these guys are asst. coaches or beer league goalies who didn't go past college.

Its the NHL, they have the money.
$5k per dressing for emergency goalies.
$500 per minute played. Would equate to $10k a period.

It's such a rare occurrence, and a great story whenever it does happen.

Who would want to change it?

Not true

It is rare for the EG to play but whenever the starter gets knocked out the EG is signed and deployed to the bench.

Sure pay should one leve if sitting on bench. Another level if they need to play.

I’m certain players on Carolina who are making millions a season pooled money together and gave him $50K-$100K. If Carolina wins the cup the players likely vote to have his name on the cup.

Other teams do have legit EG at the game. In the bruins-caunucks game thry focused on who the EG was. He played college hockey.

A broader discussion may be do teams roster go to 24 teams where each team has 3 goalies and the undressed backup gets dressed if needed. The times and EG woukd occur is if the teams 3rd goalie had a short term injury or illness and can’t dress. This could meanincreasing 50 man roster limit to 52 with 8 goalies.

The league also could mandate rules if a team has an injured goalie down to last goalie..any goalie contact is a penalty.

If what happens in the game down to backup would be a 10 min major and coach is ejected.

I’ve alaways believed this....

If a player is injured due to a penalty the team can dress a replacement player.

For a minimum contract a day, it's $3,629 a day. (thanks capfriendly!) You also have college considerations, when the player called up they lose NCAA (and I believe Usport) eligibility.

3K for the day of play + meal + jersey. That should equal out to 3600.

For Usport/NCAA, a prorated contract for each year of eligibility lost. (play a Freshman {example}, 4 years.) The player 'lost' 4 years of college play/scholarship. Compensation due.

The contract should not count on the cap, it's an emergency. The team is doing it's best to provide the NHL a game.

Here's where I am conflicted; if a team uses a retired player. Should the compensation be higher? EBUGs have ranged from schmoe off the street to goalie coach. I'm a Preds fan and Chris Mason is in the broadcast booth. He's my bet that's the Preds EBUG. The story of EBUGs is amazing but as we covered, there can be a conflict of interest.

Should away teams carry their own EBUG?

Frank seravilli TSN said it’ll probably be addressed in next gm meeting. 100k to each team for a 3rd goalie that travels with team and does supporting duties

That makes the most sense.

Funny enough, I remember playing NHLPA 93 on Sega and every team had 3 goalies you could chose from.

"Zamboni driver by day, emergency goaltender by night" David Ayres earned First Star honors and saved the day for the Canes in Toronto! Grab your t-shirt jersey to support the Canes' newest legend!
  • Screen printed with Ayres' name and number on back
  • Front of shirt mirrors Hurricanes away jersey
  • Locally printed in Raleigh
  • Ayres will receive royalties for the shirt and a portion of the proceeds will go to a kidney foundation.

Yeah, I played NHL 94 a lot and would sometimes use Charlie Huddy as a goalie. I was surprised at intermission when Hrudey mentioned him as not being a real roster player.

Does anyone know what would have happened if Ayres got injured by the way?

$500 Is fair if you sit on the bench. Should jump to $5k if you step a skate in the crease... Most AHL goalies make $70k in the A but get called up and all of a sudden are making $700K+...

This stat alone is worth $5k...

Heard Ayres in an interview on TSN 1050 and he said it's unpaid.

The hosts later said a tweet confirmed the $500 salary but even that seems low. And unpaid sounds illegal, since he's not in the NCAA where unpaid labour is celebrated and enforced.

Dont know whats true or not but the team should step up and make it right. If they can't legally pay him - hire him to a 25K commercial/publicity for hockey in Carolina. With his popularity this week would be succssful

I hear the Canes are a bunch of jerks tho - so they likely do nothing

There's absolutely no reason why someone barely-qualified should be paid such ridiculous amounts. That the NHL could pay more doesn't mean they should. This should be viewed as a matter of duty rather than a cash-grab.
