Weither the Winnipeg Jets want to or not it looks like they are going into a rebuild.

The Leafs have a very good top 6 forward group, they had 4 30 or more goal scorers last year, then you had Calle Jarnkrok who had 20, after that it gets a little thin.

Enter El Nino.

Acquired from Nashville last year I don't see the point in the Jets keeping him given that it looks like they are entering a rebuild.

The man can put up 20-25 goals and would be a great depth add for Toronto.

decent player ...may be too pricy for the leafs and they want to get 'heavier'

Not sure what you mean here. Nino plays a heavy game. That’s really his main attribute, not his offense. Really tough to handle around the front of the net, and in the corners, and he does it all without taking penalties. One of those players who has the ability to piss opponents off.

You’re right that the Leafs probably can’t afford him, though.

i just meant they will likely scrape the bottom of the cap hit @ the 1 mil mark for the heavy 4th/3rd liners to fill it out again

Would be a good add as he'll be looking to put up a big season before UFA. There is motivated Nino and unmotivated Nino....completely different players. He could put up 30/30 in Toronto if given a top six opportunity with one of the big boys.

I think the Jets keep him because there's no point in moving him unless the Jets retained 50%.

Other than that, I expect by January 2024 that there will be Jets proposals front and centre as we're bound to have a firesale.

I think the Jets potentially moving a bunch of other veteran pieces is probably exactly the reason they might want to just keep Nino. They might have a lot of young/inexperienced players that they're trying to introduce to the roster, and Niederreiter is a good insulating winger for those purposes. Though depending on how things are looking toward the deadline, and how he feels about re-signing with the Jets...maybe that's the point at which he gets moved.

Nino would be a really good fit on the Leafs. He's a good fit for most teams as pretty much every team can use a physical top 9 forward who can put up 25+25 and play in multiple scenarios/line combinations.

He's prone to take dumb penalties at times but his positives of aggravating and pissing off the other team far outweigh this. He's appropriately paid (if not a bit under) at $4m and he also has a wicked shot when he chooses to use it. Maybe not the smartest player but he knows what to do to be effective. Can play on a first line in stints but definitely fits in with a bruising 2nd/3rd line role.

He's only had over 44 points once, a long time ago, though he definitely can provide secondary scoring- about 20 g/yr. He has a good shot, and is always around the crease looking for rebounds.

Would also disagree that PIM are a problem. He draws way more penalties that he takes. He seems to absolutely annoy the hell out of people, yet he almost never gets caught doing anything outright dirty, and seems to be a nice guy off ice. He averages a bit over 30 PIM /season, which isn't very much for a guy who plays hard along the boards and netfront. Last year he had 22 PIM in 78gp.... that's peanuts.

Sorry, my 25+25 was more if he were in the Leafs top 6. I'd be surprised if he couldn't hit those numbers playing those minutes with those players.

For PIM, I never said he took a lot of penalties, I said he can be prone to taking dumb ones... but I also said his positives far outweigh that so we are in agreeance there.
