Ekblad hit on Hagel - suspended 2 games

It's gonna be Mikkola .

He got 5 and the game. ZG wasn't "injured" nor left the game. Unnecessary hit, but IMO the penalty was sufficient IMO. Dumber hit between the two, but he got kicked out for it.

Ekblad didn't get a whistle at all and Hagel never played again.
I think he gets a game if I had to guess between the two.

Not a pretty play, but honestly it was more of a shove with an forearm than a predatory hit with an elbow.
It's baffling that it wasn't called, as it was a rather obvious penalty, but overall it seems like a missed minor to me.

Yeah a very weird play - almost like you can make it look like whatever you want it to look like in your head. Like that blue dress meme.

- from a Florida perspective: it’s definitely not an elbow. Looks like he went to push the guy and somehow went to high with his arm, catching the guy’s face, but without much force. Unlucky injury caused by head hitting ice after the fall.

- from a Tampa perspective: he skates directly into the guy and launches his arm directly into his face. Clear intent to injure.

No clue what DOPS will do with it. Wouldn’t be surprised with anything from no phone call to a couple games. But that’s generally true for plays that are a lot more obvious than this play too…

Intentions should matter though. I think we've seen clearly worse hits in these playoffs where guys have either gotten a 2min penalty or nothing. Ekblad had his hands tucked in and didn't leave his feet. Sure, his hands were a bit high but had Hagel gotten up nobody would have blinked an eye. And nobody did until Hagel left the game. We have no idea what these guys are already going through and that's why it would be foolish to just look at the end result, who knows what Hagel was already dealing with.

Mikkola's play was stupid, I don't think he did it on purpose but still he went for the hit. Normally I agree the five he got would be enough but I think they want to cool things down so he'll get a game.

I wonder if he’s running the show for the officials in the playoffs this year. Guys are trying to one up Raffi Torres this playoffs. Thankfully no one’s trying to pull a Dale Hunter eventhough I wouldn’t put it past someone at this point.

I think Ekblad said himself he used PEDs to help recover from an injury, didn’t he?
Ultimately, I made a mistake by taking something to help me recover from recent injuries without first checking with proper medical and team personnel," Ekblad said. "I have let my teammates, the Panthers organization and our great fans down. For that, I am truly sorry. I have accepted responsibility for my mistake and will be fully prepared to return to my team when my suspension is over. I have learned a hard lesson and cannot wait to be back with my teammates."
What else would "he" say? The team obviously wrote that for him, he's an adult, he knew very well what he was doing.

Will be interesting to see if the league will review this. The high hit by Hagel at least was a hit, he could make the argument that he didn't intend to go that high, heat of the moment and all that but how do you defend a forearm shiver to head?

I think we agree. 👍

Does anyone have another angle? Looks more like a forearm shiver to the chest.
Barkov really needs to learn how to keep his head up. Would just hate to see his career ended by CTE.

Unless your chest is in your face you need glasses bud.

This was actually worse than the Hagel hit, it's an elbow to the face.

Yeah, that was my immediate reaction. Not an elbow, and the damage was probably done from the player's head hitting the ice. But that's still Ekblad's responsibility as the hitter, so if there's an injury he should get a game.

Actual elbow for comparison
