I'm getting flashbacks of the sick Kaberle-McCabe pair the Leafs had years back

Only EK>>>>>Kaberle

This could be that combo but way more effective... Can't wait to watch the Power Play

Emphatic no. EK and Dion aren't going to play a ton of ES minutes together. I'm sure he'll help the PP, but I wouldn't expect the world. 10 goals, 35-40 points type production. He won't come close to his 60 point, 20 goal form, and that's fine.

I feel like you're being way too optimistic.

EK is pretty much God... How does he not get Phanuef open for the bomb he has? How does Dion not get hyped to Tee off bombs

He's going to get open looks no doubt in my mind... And I think he's going to love it.

Softer minutes at even strength he'll get... Picturing him doing what he did in Calgary

He's only 30... And EK is the best player in hockey, that's a valuable piece to be playing with

Do we know that they're even going to stick Phaneuf on the 1PP unit?

Right now they kind of make a triangle with Karlsson on the blue line and a wide player along the boards on either side (usually Turris or Hoffman on the left, Ryan on the right). Since Karlsson can move the puck side to side very quickly, it stretches the 4 defenders out laterally, which opens up lanes to shoot through. The fact that they can do it with 3 players means they've got 2 guys left over to play deeper and get in front of the net, bang in rebounds and retrieve the puck.

Sticking Phaneuf back on the blue line means they'll have to completely change their powerplay around, because he probably can't do much beyond sit just inside the blue line and wait for a one-timer. They'll have 1 fewer guy deep and it will just make the PP one-dimensional.

I'm more excited about what he can do to improve the PK. It's currently worst in the league, but I assume Dion is a lot better than Cowen as a penalty killer.

I doubt he'll play a lot with Karlsson.

I don't think we should be so optimistic, just happy that we finally have a top 4 defensemen to play big minutes and also help our young guys develop into good players and provide them with stable play.

Also it will be beneficial for Chabot who will not be rushed.

It just occurred to me that Hoffman would feel particularly threatened by our acquisition of Phaneuf.

Hopefully his greatest impact is with Ceci and Chabot. Ceci taking a step forward would be huge.

This can't be stressed enough.

I hope they only play together on the PP.

We needed a top 4, someone to man the 2nd pair. Hopefully it works out with Ceci but, correct me if I'm wrong. Dion's best year in Calgary were when he was playing the right side.

So he could be paired with Boro and form one of the most feared shutdown tandem in the league.

Methot-Karlsson
Boro-Phaneuf
Wiercioch-Ceci

The reason to bring in a top 4 was so that we don't have Boro there and more importantly to stabilize the second pairing with Ceci. I really hope we don't see Weir or Boro outside of the bottom pairing

Expect he will play 2nd pairing PP minutes with Ceci. At first anyway until he can practice. This won't mess up the D rotations.

If you just set your standards on a stay at home D that allows Ceci some freedom to push on, then I think you will be in a safer state of mind.

Left handed shot was the reason we got him...

He's gonna help Ceci but also Boro and Weircoch due to playing down a pairing where they belong, so hopefully they will continue to develop a little better than being thrown in the fire.

I'm sure playing in the 2 group will be good for him too. Plus he has a cannon of of shot.

I dont see it. Phaneuf is past his prime and isnt a good enough skater to score 20. Maybe more points though

I wont say its impossible. Ijust wouldnt bet on it
