If EK was a free agent and you can only sign him to a 5 year deal that would start today, how much are you giving him. I am asking because I personally wouldn't go more than 7Mx5 and I don't understand how he has value at north of 7M on a 5 year deal. I am curious what the majority thinks he is worth if you can get him for free, let alone trade assets for him.

You have to consider the cap going up too. By the time he's 37, something like 5.000 will be peanuts if he's even a 4D by then.

What is he worth next year alone? Probably 11.500 I would say, since he's clearly among the best players in the league today.
Age 34 you're looking at a similar number.. maybe 11.000
Age 35 we expect a decline. 9.500
Age 36. Another decline. 8.000
Age 37. Heavy decline. 5.000
Average: 9.000

Edit: Why 5yrs and not 4 though? He only has 4yrs left after this year.

Because he is a defenseman pacing for 100+ points on a bottom-feeder. That will make some GMs drool.

He also gives them media attention and jersey sales. Pretty easy question to answer.

Hall of fame defenseman, absolutely proving age doesn't matter this year and playing on a pretty cruddy roster generally speaking. 100% with 10M x 5.

I guess technically 4.5 years, I'm making the assumption he is a Free Agent right now for the purposes of this poll.

For my main club, the Jackets, he's absolutely worth $10m x 4.5. One of the best 5-10 players in the league

I think there are probably a few clubs that would want him at that price, the problem is that EK wants to go to a contender and those clubs can't fit in his cap hit.

There needs to be a wouldn't offer a contract option.
I’m glad he is having a good season. The league is at its best when it’s best players are healthy and able to be its best players.

But given his history I would have no faith in his ability to stay healthy and repeat this season. I hope he does but I wouldn’t bet my teams valuable cap space on it.

Karlsson will age well IMO cause he still can skate. Decline in 30+ years affects players at skating more than anything else. A 5 year deal would be age 33-37.

$8M for 5 years is something I see several teams offering.

One area I ponder about is usage. With Burns sharing the load, Karlsson was not the same. With Burns gone and Karlsson getting more of the attention and top usage, you see him playing to his value from the Sens days.

Based on this year for 5 years he's worth probably 9-10m depending on how desperate a team would be for him which I guarantee at least 1 team would offer this.

However, I expect this thread to be "I wouldn't pay him more than 7m"
