Okay, I'm usually positive, but it's time to rip into this team a bit. Yes it was a back-to-back, however:
- When the Avs are offside, if I'm not looking at the screen and guess that the player responsible is Rantanen, I feel like I'll be right at least 50% of the time. It's also gotten to the point where when he can control of the puck and a defender approaches him to challenge him, I just assume he's going to lose the puck battle and probably fall down so he can't even back check. I love when he scores as much as anyone, but I do not want to watch 8 more years of this while he's declining and taking up even more of the cap. The offseason was the time to do it, but I have to hope CMac is at least exploring ways to trade him, maybe after the season as a sign and trade.
- The powerplay is obviously playing like dogshit at the moment. I really feel like Mittlestadt needs to be replaced with Lehkonen or even Ivan. And stop giving Rantanen the puck so much - he should be getting open for tips and one-timers - he's not the playmaker on that unit.
- Speaking of which, Mittlestadt is also playing quite poorly. He just doesn't have the speed to carry the puck, and yet is often putting himself in position to do just that. He's also not winning puck battles like he has in the past. Something has clearly affected his confidence - maybe it's just not scoring.
- I think it comes back to goaltending, but I feel like a lot of guys are playing tentative. They're not going for hits on the forecheck because they're worried they'll be out of position. The defense backs off the opposing blueline because they're afraid of odd man rushes.
- I think MacKinnon is trying to do too much - he's always at his best when he's relaxed and confident and willing to make the simple play just as much as the insane play. Makar is someone who actually plays well when trying to do to much - MacK not so much.
- I have very little faith in Georgiev's ability to "turn it around". I sure hope CMac and co are turning over every rock to replace him.
- Malinski is clearly not ready for anything but bottom pair duty.
Positives (I have to)
- Kovalenko looks good, although he's obviously still figuring out the awful officiating in this league.
- Ivan continues to look like an NHL player and could be a long-term option at center.
- Toews looks much better. Earlier in the season he was awful, but seems to have returned to his usual
- Girard is at his peak, which is nice to see
- Makar is still all-world
- Nichushkin keeps looking closer and closer to his old self
Edit: After reading the other posts, I have wonder. I get the desire to have Bednar fired, but the team has the worst save percentage in the league, is routinely missing 50-75% of the top 9 forwards, and yet is fighting for a wildcard spot. Those three pieces of information alone should mean Bednar's job is safe. I wouldn't be shocked if they fire him, but good coaches get fired all the time because of bad goaltending, and it's never a good decision.
