9-game update: Kapanen has found a home in Edmonton's top six as a third wheel who does all the little stuff to support his linemates, rotating between Draisaitl and McDavid while continuing to make really smart plays that don't always show up on the score sheet. He scored a textbook goal last night where he just got open and let Leon do his thing. That's all we ever hoped for out of his skillset.
However, he's also been a huge addition to the PK which I didn't expect. Like look at these splits:
Before Kapanen- 16/43 (37%)
After Kapanen- Killed 16/19 (84%!!!)
Yes the group as a whole has come around after a historically bad start, but Kap's speed is such an asset and allows the coaching staff to run the same type of formation on PK2 as PK1. I fully expect him to bag a SHG at some point here, he's just so good at backing guys off.
All in all Kap has been well worth the claim, he could completely disappear after helping us through our recent run of injuries and this difficult stretch of playing Minnesota/Vegas/Florida/Boston and we wouldn't have any complaints. Sometimes you just get lucky on waivers and we seem to have here.
