I think the Oil will have him back for the playoffs, but even in the AHL, I doubt he'll be an everyday player.
Imagine more of a player-coach who gets into the odd game here and there more than anything else.

I wrote this the other day...

He's been serviceable in spurts, and is still an absolute wizard in the faceoff dot; but his speed and strength are completely shot. It's been his hockey IQ carrying him, as he looks exactly like what you'd expect a 38 year old, 5'10 player with a bad back to look like.

If he got a month off and a chance to recover, I think you could squeeze a little more out of him. But the Oil have been running a bare-bones roster this season and he was forced to be an everyday player. Thus that gas tank is completely empty.

He's 37 and pretty cooked as an NHL player. He should absolutely clear. Really not a spot for him as he could be an injury replacement guy but our healthy scratch spot is currently occupied by Jeff Skinner.

Skinner, request a trade already. This match clearly doesn't fit. Coach doesn't trust him, he's not going to earn a spot here. It's time to find a mutual solution. 3m wasted in the pressbox isn't working for Edmonton and a pending UFA veteran sitting in the pressbox the rest the year isn't going to do wonders for him on July 1st either when he's looking for his next NHL contract.

Philp has 9 games to show he's ready, or the team will look to add a 4C before the deadline.
