Edler for Plekanec

sigh!

Soooo what you are saying is because we know it's bull, it can't be a basis for discussion because... shut up

Is that what you're saying? or do you have a deeper meaning in your post I did not understand?

Maybe next year. If Eller shows himself to be capable of playing well as a #2C and Desharnais/Briere/Galchenyuk can take on the premium offensive minutes, Plekanec is moveable for a need and we desperately need a #2 defenceman. That being said I'd much rather see:

Plekanec
Eller
Galchenyuk

than...

Desharnais
Eller
Galchenyuk

For the upcoming year at least seems like Montreal have more need of Plekanec than Vancouver do and Vancouver have more need of Edler than Montreal do.

What happened to 'one big thread' for all of eklunds garbage rumours? Shouldn't this nonsense be moved to that?

This thread will probably be moved there. Been a while I didn't see anything posted by this guy... not that it should concern us.

It would only make sense if we knew for sure Eller was good enough to replace Plek in our center depth, which isn't the case. Also, we'd need to make room for Edler anyway by trading a veteran or a youngster, which I doubt will happen.

I know it was just a scrimmage game, but Plekanec looked damn good yesterday. Wouldn't be easy for me to trade such a consistent all-around player. I love his passion for the game and hie quiet but effective approach. We may not see him get back to his 70 point form from a few seasons ago as Eller, Gally and Desharnais take some offensive pressure off his shoulders but I think it will allow him to be even more effective in his role this year. We won't regret not trading him.

Plekanec has consistently been one of the hardest working players for the past 5 years. He never gives up, and he's been given really crappy roles on this team. Now that he's being given some linemates with the same work ethic as him he should be able to show us how good he can be offensively (like his big year with Kovalev and Kostitsyn).

A lot of people around here want him gone, but a lot of people around here don't know much about hockey and get impatient way too easily.

I actually think something can be done around this.

Edler+Higgins+Schroeder for Plekanec+Markov? Canucks go for the cup. We get a younger offensive defenseman, young centre for AHL or first call-up and good middle 6 winger. I personally always liked Higgins even if he is inconsistent.

If Ryder came back why not Higgins?

But Edler and Subban...

Vancouver would be over the cap with anything more than a 20 man roster...

Pleks may not be a superstar but he is one of the very best two way centers in the league who never takes a night off. I appreciate his game and consistent efforts.

I have always been a big believer in Plekanec. Very talented, team player. Any GM would love to have him.

I know Edler less well. I recall a smooth, largish defenceman. Good puck mover.

The two players have identical cap hits, $5M. More term on Edler's deal but he is 3 or 4 years younger.

Despite my reluctance to part with Plekanec, moving him for Edler could help the Habs. But it would involve moving one of our own core defencemen in a separate deal. For the purposes of arguement, let's say Markov (and others?) in a deal for Wayne Simmonds. Or better still, a rugged LWer

The Habs get bigger, tougher and younger. They may lose a little initially on the PP with Edler subbing for Markov but with Beaulieu and Nygren on the horizon, together with Diaz and PK, puck-handling D should not be much of an issue.

And Markov is not getting younger. Though I expect another good season from him this year, particularly if his ice time is more carefully controlled, he is on the decline. Unlike Edler.

Without Pleks and Markov, the Habs shape up this way:

NOW

Galchenyuk Eller Gallagher
Pacs Desharnais Gionta (Thomas)
Bourque Briere Simmonds
Prust White Moen

Edler PK
Emelin Diaz
Murray Gorges
(Tinordi, Cube)

IN A COUPLE OF YEARS

Pacs Galchenyuk Simmonds
Collberg Eller Gallagher
De La Rose Desharnais Thomas (McCarron)
4th line

Tinordi PK
Edler Nygren
Beaulieu Pateryn (Dietz)

extras: Leblanc? Gorges? Diaz?

To me, this looks like a plan.
