Series Talk: ECSFs Discussion - All The Smoke Edition - Panthers Tied 2-2

So much for my take that Lundell and Luostar are black holes offensively.... :sarcasm:

If they continue playing like that (specially Marchand), we are looking pretty good for a repeat. Let's hope it continues trending up.
The 3rd line can take a lot of the 5v5 pressure off of Benny and Chucky and allow them to focus their 5v5 time on pissing the other team off.

IMO those two definitely have more success when they have a line driver on the wing. We saw it with Reinhart a few years back and now with Marchy now in sync with them.
He has been great with puck possession and putting the puck in the right spot for them to make plays.

I loved Tank with them last year, but Marchy is a huge upgrade on Tank

Someone commented to not be particularly impressed with the Panthers intensity this year, I wouldn't disagree with that, but I can also see how they are slowly ramping up, it gets better each game, every game you see things and players finally clicking, it would be so awesome if they are just getting warmed up, right now, it looks like it is.

The D especially that whole series. How many goals can we count in that series where we had a guy wide open one on one with Vasilevskiy? The two that immediately come to mind (the most egregious) are the first Tkachuk PPG and the Lundell goal in G4. There were several other massive breakdowns by the Lightning D in the dangerous areas in front.

And add to it that the first two goals of the series by Benny and Reino were deflections on set plays. It set the tone for how Vasilevskiy was playing (really overplaying) the puck all series because that is the way to beat a big goaltender like him.
Yeah I think Vasy is overplaying, or trying to make up too much for defensive errors and missed assignments.

When Bob first came to Panthers he did the same and had some atrocious results.

Me just listening and reading every Tampa fan crashing out over the course of this entire series

Man, remember when they’d just be arrogant and cocky and flaunt all of their accomplishments in our faces, probably the worse fanbase I’ve experienced in person over the course of my life (and that’s saying something) and now they’ve resorted to complaining about officiating, whining, complaining about hits, petty insults that don’t land, crowd size during warms up, etc. oh how the mighty have fallen. You just love to see it

@WaitingForThatCab said it in the other thread. @Gentle Man referenced a comment from me last year.

i've been thinking about this again, too. i guess i'm judging based on a few things - winning races and battles is part of it but defensive structure and the effort and discipline it takes to maintain that is also so important and maybe is not valued high enough. i think i have tended to put too high a value on the forecheck and recovery efforts, probably because it's the most obvious. you know, big hits and waves of cycles with recoveries, takeaways and OZ time dominance.

when you look at a series win like this though, it makes you think. there may be more but i can only think of one goal that came off the forecheck. def had more rush goals and i don't recall many consecutive shifts where we imposed our will via forecheck. we lost the OZ time battle last night by a wide margin yet still, aside from those 2 spectacular saves by bob, the lightning weren't really able to open us up. that's impressive. even the PP goal they scored was defended very well right up until that shot thanks in large part to effort. (bob might want that one back but that's another story... he's been great overall.)

i think what's been very consistent is the defensive effort and structure. we've won each game in a very different style. maurice said earlier in the series that game 1 didn't look like a "panthers style" game thanks to more controlled exits and entries. last night was another one of those. not many odd-man rushes against, great back-pressure and amazing DZ work to stay in good defensive side position. all that really choked the lightning.

aside - i wonder if there was a strategy to look for more off the rush in this series vs. forecheck? some analysts were talking about us being able to impose our will via forecheck because of their lack of footspeed but maybe we zagged when they were looking for a zig; maybe their D is/was more vulnerable in transition?

The crowd size during warmup thing was so hilarious. Like what? The building is electric during the actual game. What arena in the NHL is filled to the brim and rocking during warmups?

I think one of the bigger lessons we learned in 2023 was that you could lose the cup before round 4 even if you make it to round 4.

The team was basically dead. Could they have beaten Vegas at full strength? Honestly the answer could very well still be no. But they basically had no shot with the state the team was in.

Last year you could see them ramp it up as the rounds went along while ramping it up in spots as necessary. Think Round 2 game 2 against Boston.

What could be to our benefit this go around is the fact there is only 1 heavy team left in the East and thats Washington. If we play them, that is in round 3.

I think if Ottawa wins tonight, they'll win game 7. That could be bad in a way that they'd come in hot similar to the 2023 Panthers. Only way we'd have home ice.

If Toronto wins tonight, do they finally turn the corner and make a serious deep run?

in 2023, the team's identity came from their aggressiveness. and yeah, that was their strength but it eventually ground them down.

although the players and maurice still talk a good game, they are really picking their spots now. we seem content to rope-a-dope if our opponent goes along with it. we are so sound defensively, we can defend better for longer stretches than we could back then.

it'll be interesting to see how the next series goes strategy-wise.

Same could be said last year.

They've learned a lot about energy management over the last few years.

Last year, you could tell that they were doing just enough to win.

We're not going to see them play like they did in 2023 ever again. Not on a regular basis at least.
