This is all part of Berubes masterplan, we display some of the most pathetic hockey mankind has ever witnessed in Game 5 just so that the Panthers will go easy on us out of pity in Game 6 and 7.

A man can dream. Leafs in 7.

This is where they’ll play their best, when everyone has accepted that they’ve lost so the pressure is gone. That is until the dying minutes of a tie game 7 and we lose in appropriate fashion.

I know that there are nuances with language here, but the implication with "can't even be bothered to turn his head" was that he ought to have turned his body or opened his hips to where the pass was coming from rather than doing what he did. The kids I coach don't really like stops and starts either, but there's a lot less on the line with them.

Since you had dismissed the initial post with the comment that he was looking at the puck which was already past him, I thought I'd go ahead and point out that it hadn't.

Maybe you're already on the crucify Marner bandwagon, though. :dunno:
It wasn't a nuanced comment, it was actually quite direct with a clear message. In your second post you laid it out really well, whereas in the first post you opted to take a jab.

Again, defending either player right now feels pointless with how poorly they've both played. But, I'd rather opposing fans make valid criticisms rather than take petty shots.

For what it's worth I've spent my life on the crucify-the-entire-Leafs'-organization bandwagon. No plans on getting off anytime soon.

Steve Dangle went nuclear during his stream last night, showing his live reaction to that goal in particular.

:biglaugh:

Honestly this is pretty tame considering the play marner made and followed it up with a poor effort to take away the cross net pass.

Geez.
And Vancouver gets roasted for having a lethal fan base.
In Vancouver they haven't even been playoff contenders just doing the same thing over and over.

IMO TO needs size and guys that hit more, not just bumping but an occasional impact. In Van. Sherwood was credited with a massive number of hits, IMO he did get close enough but most were late and more like just close or bumps but he did get close enough often enough to make heads turn.

I haven't watch TO many full games but is there a player that really hits hard with the exception of Pacorietty?

Yes? You think trying the same thing over and over and over again is going to work? The idea that "they have to score eventually!" is just pure copium at this point. We need to stir things up, or game 6 will be over before the puck drops.
Thank god you're not the coach

As has been said repeatedly with no rebuttal, Panthers took out Stolarz knowing they could beat the team if they didn't have great goaltending. See the 2022-23 series.

Are you really the better team if you have to resort to dishonorable tactics?
I mean you are right there. But they only scored one goal.

Marner deserves heat on this goal, but the emboldened is patently false.

Boqvist has Marner angled off here- bumping it to Matthews isn't an option.

Marner curls and pops the puck out to Matthews after creating the lane. I've circled it for you. You can see Matthews looking over his right shoulder at it.

Puck is still coming, Matthews is still looking with his toes pointing North:

Rather than going heel-to-heel, or slowing down or stopping, Matthews decides he's going to whip his head around to the left shoulder and hope to catch the pass on his backhand:

The rest is history.

Marner got the puck past the forecheck and into an area where Matthews should have been able to pick it up.
Matthews is certainly expecting Marner to use the board to move the puck. That's why he turns his head to his right and keep going to beat Jesper to where the puck should have been dumped.
Instead, Marner sends a blind pass in the vicinity of Matthews, with little more than a hope and a prayer. Matthews doesn't have time to adjust to the pass.

Hey- my rational for making the post in the first place was to defend Marner’s play out of the zone because of what world-class piece of shit Sean Avery posted about the play (it’s also earlier in the thread than the one that was posted just after mine).

If that’s not a petty shot, what is?

Matthews and Marner just aren't big game players. Never have been and never will be. It's been the same story with this core for the past decade. Get the fans excited during the regular season and completely disappear in the playoff when it matters most.

Before game 5 Knies was only Leaf player with a >50% xGF 5v5, but he fell below 50 after game 6. In the series the team is 37% xGF as counted by naturalstattrick, or 40% Corsi.

It's the playoffs and only results matter and the game is not played 5v5 only, but I'm not sure you can win a series against the Panthers like that.

Marner ALWAYS does this in the playoffs, even last time we played Florida him and Nylander made the same play under pressure at almost the exact same spot. Instead of using the boards, forechecker came, panics cause he's about to get hit, pizza up the middle in the NZ.

I still remember it as if it was yesterday, it was literally back to back plays, I wanna say game 2 in 2023 vs Florida. The look on ROR's face, he knew he couldn't help these guys. I think he said "Are you f***ing kidding me" under his breath

Gonna try and find the clip. Play at 5:00

But anytime he's pressured making a break out pass from the D zone, he either throws it up the middle or flip dumps it and sometimes ends up going over the glass (Montreal series). For whatever reason he's allergic to using the boards and always has to try and make a pass to the middle.

Yikes... you aren't kidding. Leafs are getting destroyed.

Genuinely this is on Auston Matthews. You’re the f***ing captain, step up and do some captain shit.

I lost a lot of respect for him this series, I always thought he was treated very harshly around the league by media and fans. But I see he deserves it now.

You’re the highest paid player in the league. f***ing act like it. Put your balls on the table. He’s been invisible this series. At least Nylander has been dangerous and Marner is just Marner.

McDavid showed the world last season what it looks like to dig the f*** in. He dragged his team kicking and screaming to a goal within the cup. He took that next step in leadership. Matthews has 3 goals in his last 21 playoff games and I don’t think he ever will elevate his game in the playoffs like the greats typically do.

He is an overrated diva. Regular season merchant. Keep taking short term deals to maximize your income instead of showing some loyalty you f***ing dope.

I’m sorry Leafs fans. If this guy is your captain you are going nowhere.
When Matthews is scoring > a scoring machine!!!
When Matthews isn't> a 200ft player, Selke candidate, a defensive juggernaut!!!

Such a complete player whether he's in a slump or when he's not:thumbu::huh:
