Idk at this point. Matthews is hurt, i get it. He still looks engaged but it's been the same story for nearly a decade.

"He's still good defensively"

Like, yes. He is. But when you're making the money he is, you need to score a goal in the playoffs once and a while. Marner is somehow even more useless. Not only can he not handle the tighter checking nature of the playoffs, he falls apart harder mentally too. Completely disengages from the game, starts floating, makes lazy/stupid plays like the backhander.

At this point maybe you just say screw it and trade Matthews while letting Marner walk. Bring Tavares back on a discount since he has actually been pretty solid. Knies/Nylander are your new leaders and go from there.

If Berube can't get these guys to rise up, then nothing will.

Nylander isnt a leader either IMO. He is terrible in the Leafs half of the ice, not interested in anything.

This I just do not get. There was no point in making that spin around back pass when there were several safer options. It was not one or the other, it was A, B, Off the glass, Ice the puck, THEN spin-o-rama backhand pass. Its like he was so afraid of the contact, that the spin away from the hit, and make the pass, would be the safer play for HIM, not the team.
Exactly. The fear factor comes into play with MM.

Leafs are getting shit on, and rightfully so. Just a f***ing embarrassment. At least lose with a little f***ing heart, a little emotion.

As a side note, congrats on a dominating showing last night, Panther fans. Full marks to the team. They're just a wagon. If the Leafs lose this series, which almost seems a certainty right now, Marner has played his last game in Toronto. It's almost a guarantee they'll use that money elsewhere, especially with Knies' overall performance in these playoffs.

And to think, if the reports are true, that Marner nixed a trade to Carolina for Rantanen.

One final note: f*** it. I'm going down with the ship. GLG.
I'll always stick with the team till the final game every year but last night was a tough one to swallow even by the Leafs standards over the last many years of this group. I would like nothing more than the Leafs to prove everyone wrong but it's hard to expect anything other than a Florida win tomorrow.

The most Leafy thing that can happen is Toronto wins tomorrow only to lay an egg in Game 7

Matthews is still better of the two. Why else the Leafs would be paying 30% more to Matthews if he wasn't the superior player by a significant margin? Matthews is just snakebitten in this series but even a random casual fan of the sport would come to the conclusion that Matthews is better.
Yeah you’re right.

Everyone knows Nurse and Hamilton are better than Hughes. Why else would these teams be paying them more?

3 goals in last 21 games

Yeah I don’t think it’s being “just snake bitten in this series” lol

I think Zito would, and may eventually will, add a player beyond Barky's salary, simply because of how the salaries and cap will go up, but I agree with it not being Marner.

I would be interested though to see Marner on the Panthers, and see what the coaching staff, and player environment, would do to him. Samoskevich said when he first made the squad, he had to evolve his game, and add hitting to it, because it was a requirement. I do not know if he would thrive or not, but it would be interesting to see.

I think the one player that could of beaten Barkov would of been Rantanen, if we had a legit offer for him at the TDL.
But since that came and went, I agree eventually someone will top Barkov, but not for a bit IMO

Another question if/when the Leafs lose with a whimper: is part of the "big changes" to show Shanahan the door? I think it might be. If you're making big changes, start at the top.

No reason to get rid of Tre or Berube but, if they lose, it's time to take the Shanaplan and wipe your ass with it.

As a true fan does.

I feel like the first 3 games are the games the team builds off of to get deeper into the playoffs. Whether that's this year or down the line, they came out flying to start the series and threw the Panthers off their game. The Panthers have been dialed in during the playoffs for years, everyone understands their assignments and play it to a T.

If you look at Florida and Toronto in the playoffs this year:

1. Toronto - 4-1 leading after 1, 5-0 leading after 2
2. Florida - 4-0 leading after 1, 6-0 leading after 2

1. Toronto - 0-3 trailing after 1, 0-4 trailing after 2
2. Florida - 1-1 trailing after 1, 1-3 trailing after 2

That all important first goal.

By contrast, Edmonton is 3-2 trailing after 1, 3-3 trailing after 2.

Shanahan needs to go if Toronto loses this series. I've got no issues with Berube or Tre at this point.

What does he do really? Honestly. Does he have a say in to everyday operations? What options Berube has at his disposal as far as call ups? Final say as to what Trev will do?

And what is the point really, if you are going to keep Berube and Trev?

Personally, I would not get rid of Berube yet. Trev would scare me because of some of the deals he has made in the past.

Nylander too, which is why in his own zone he just says F&^K it, I wont even play the puck, Ill let MM make the dumb play.
Elite skills in Nylander, Marner, Mathews. You’re 100% correct they are not wired for tough, hard nosed hockey. Sports radio out here talking about the fear factor this morning.

sad fans are throwing nostrils jersey on the ice and so many so called fans left with 10 minutes left

Leaf owner ship need to clean house
Ballard years at least had a fun team to watch

I do wonder how Florida would be faring in this series if say, a Leaf player had skated through his crease halfway through game one and accidentally injured Bob.

There is no excuse for our forward group, but this Florida team isn't disliked because they play hard, no, that's not it.

It's tough to lose, but worse when you lose your starting goalie 30 minutes into a series.

The leafs have changed everything on this team over the years at every position except for 5 players. Matthews Marner Nylander Tavares Rielly. If we're realistic, Matthews isn't getting traded and of all the players at least Willy has produced in bigger games before.

Even though Rielly has been decent in the playoffs after a shit regular season, if they go out in this series i would trade him, let Tavares walk and let Marner walk. Take that cap space and give this team a different look next season

so the core 4 cant go (maybe mitch if he walks)
so many other players have come and go and gm's and coach's

the core 3 with mitch gone will kill this team for years

I'm not sure what Shanahan does, to be honest. I guess he's Tre's boss.

I think his primary job title is to blame everyone else for his team's failures, because he's still here.

Berube isn't going anywhere, and neither is Tre. They inherited a lot of this mess. You have to give them some rope.

I don't mind the losing. Honestly. It's hockey. Only one team can win it all. The Capitals lost forever before winning a Cup. A lot of teams did. But there is no f***ing excuse for that showing last night. Nothing. Get beat by a better team? That's fine. Completely mail it in, at home, in one of the biggest games this core has played in? Unacceptable.

Marner, Tavares and Rielly would need to go. It all depends on who they bring in with all that cap money to replace them. Going from the five guys who've been here through it all down to two of them would send a shock through that dressing room
