The play was very clearly dead regardless of a whistle. Every player had stopped playing and the linesman had left their positions to go to the net.

That's why Sportsnet is talking about it. The NHL literally told them the puck is allowed to go in after the whistle as long as no other player touches it after the whistle is blown

What goalie, with a puck under his pad near the goal line, would just stand up before the play is dead? Not one.
