So who's saved more? 36 Shots against is nothing special but to save 36 and play every minute including OT and Shootout is not normal. As I mentioned...in this tournament, his numbers are far higher than any other goaltenders. If he manages to get it together once again the US kids are gonna have quite some fun with him tonight. He's been the standout goalie so far. The only other goalie with similar performances would be Samsonov. He's been excellent as well.

This has not been a particularly notable tournament for goaltending. You could argue that JvP has been the best, but that isn't saying much. We have seen the duties much more evenly spread with multiple teams splitting the preliminary games between their goalies this year. Can't say I have ever seen that happen so often in a WJC before. Therefore van Pottelberghe has little competition for minutes played and it is difficult to properly judge the majority of keepers in this tourney with just two games under their belt. For the record, his save % ranks only fifth, and his GAA is ninth. Not best goalie numbers in my book. Furthermore, we aren't just talking about the Top Goaltender award, but this is an MVP thread! He's so far away from serious consideration for that honour that it's not even funny.

When did you last see a 19yo play well in two back to backs with only one day rest between against strong competition? Shootout and OT not even mentioned. Maybe it was wrong to play him that much...we'll see tonight. But I can assure you that he didn't play for a lack of competition. While we're relatively thin upfront and very thin on defense, Matteo Ritz to me is more than just your usual backup and an amazing goalie in his own right. So it's not van Pottelberghe's fault he faced by far the most shots. He just appears to be the most trusted goalie. Life isn't always fair. Maybe the Swiss will go out against the Amerks and this will allow other goalies to catch up.
Fact is that we wouldn't have made the quarterfinals with any other goaltender except maybe Samsonov.

If you read my posts, you'd have realized by now that Van Pottelberghe would also lead SV% hadn't it been for the first period against Denmark when his teammates left him out to dry and the Danes took full advantage of it scoring 3 goals with just 8 shots. Van Pottelberge can't be blamed for any of those 3 and despite the early setbacks came up huge later in the game leading his team to a very important shootout victory.

You're fighting a losing battle. This happens pretty much every year, everyone has back-backs

Lol. It's not about winning or losing here.

You're right. Everybody has a back to back but not everybody has two...and plays the same goalie in all four games despite having a strong backup. Now, Ritz might be injured or sick...we don't know. But it doesn't matter anyway. Fact is that van Pottelberghe brought his team into the quarterfinals and to get there, he had to do it almost single handedly. He also did well despite being asked to do about 2x the work of all other goalies.

Two things you can say about nobody else. And again. Without the 1st period of the Denmarkgame he'd be leading all goalies in SV% as well.

At the moment it should be between van Pottelberghe, Rykov and Kaprizov.

So van Pottleberghe can subtract a period off his record to improve his goaltending numbers, but nobody else can?:laugh::laugh:

Kaprizov, Keller and Erikson Ek were the best players of the 3 best teams, so they're up front. Barzal for Canada.

Not sure how Russia would be in the 3 best teams if Canada isn't based on the round robin.

But yeah Kaprizov is a better candidate right now than any Canadian player.

Nylander has really only had one great game, he has the points but Grundström has been the better player of the two.

Nylander has been great in every game, do not understand people that say is invisable. His production has also been fairly even spread out, and not heavily in some blowout.

Kaprizov or Keller are my top picks from what I've seen so far.

Haven't seen enough of Sweden to have a great handle on their players, but from what I've seen of him I'm not really understanding the Eriksson Ek pick over Nylander. Ek's looked like a passenger to me whereas Nylander's been a super-consistent offensive threat.

As I said, haven't seen enough of Sweden to make that call, just curious.

Ek has not been a passenger to Nylander what-so-ever. He's looked like a man playing against kids in this tournament. I would give it to Nylander over him because of his stats, but Ek's all-around game has been great.

Well, it wouldn't help anybody else to take over SV%...and I think you understood what I was trying to get across. He had zero support in that period. He has the worst support anyway. Our defense is the worst of all teams. We've been basically playing with 2,5 defenders all tournament long. That's what makes his performances so special. He's done it all for us.

Nylander needs Eriksson Ek more than the other way around. Both have been good but EEK is the motor on that line.
