Idea taken from another thread that was apparently too serious for more than one conversation.

The thought process for NJ being Subban’s contract comes off the books this summer and we will need a replacement.

Thought process for Minnesota, from a Minnesota fan, is trade Dumba to have the cap space to re-sign Fiala.

Dumba is signed for 1 more year at a 6 million cap. He will be a UFA. He does have a 10 team ntc that NJ could be on.

Ty Smith or Pavel Zacha + 2nd is my opening offer.

I remember when Smith was the future #1 and completely untouchable. Not sure what happened there, but we don't really need more LD, especially if he's not the player he was touted to be.

That said, we can't afford Zacha, nor do we even have a roster spot for him in this scenario, so Smith+2nd would be better.

However, as we don't need Smith, my counter offer would be a 2023 top 10 protected 1st and Chase Stillman.

Smith became expendable the moment we drafted Luke Hughes (although it might be better to see what side Hughes ends up on in the NHL). We are pretty set on the left side with Graves, Siegenthaler, Smith, Bahl, Okhotiuk, and Hughes.

Stillman + a 1st seems s little steep for 1 year of Dumba though.

What about the same 1st (2023 top 10 protected) and Salminen?

We already have a RD in his walk year with Severson, so I'm not sure it'd be a great idea to add another one in Dumba. It's not as sexy, but I'd imagine we'll be targeting a quiet stay at home RD in free agency. There's only so minutes to go around with Hamilton/Severson.

At least for next season:

Siegenthaler-Hamilton
Graves-Severson
Smith-(tbd)

Let Bahl/Okhotiuk get reps in the AHL and hopefully one will be ready to take Graves' spot in 2023-24. Mix in Luke Hughes likely turning pro ~April 2023.

Hard no if that’s the cost. Even if the cost is significantly less, Devils are better off with a lesser priced RHD . Preferably Lybushkin as a UFA . No assets given up , plays well defensively which is what we need. Dumba is a little overkill with Hamilton Luke Hughes and Severson on the right side eventually.
A solid #5 RHD better fits roster construction . We’d have too much $$ invested in RHD if we added Dumba.

2nd in 2022 + 3rd in 2023 (turns into a 2nd if Dumba plays more than 60 games. If that is still good in the NHL)

doesn't seem like a Devils fan proposal,
seems like a plan to sabotage the Devils future, without improving the near-term

why spend so much young assets, for a guy who is so similar to Hamilton, and just a pricy rental?

I don't think he's worth much more than a 2nd. Jersey's 2022 2nd?

Dumba is a well above average defensive Dman now. It's taken a while, but all of those years around Suter, Brodin, and Spurgeon have sunk in. If NJ is taking him w/o sending cap back then their 2nd and a small plus(2023 4th or something like that) sounds about right. If MN has to take back salary then his value goes up. If they have to take back a lot of salary then there's no point in doing the deal.

Zacha is moved IMO (many Devs fans too). I suggest swap for a guy like Peeke in Columbus. I'd even give a little bit along with Zacha's rights. Way too much depth at Fwd if he's not doing it for us. Skill is there I think its time for new scenery

I’d love Peeke. He is very under rated .

the devils couldn't afford to keep dumba and severson. the addition of dumba only makes sense, if they don't want to resign severson. a right side of hamilton, severson and dumba is too expensive.

is dumba a clear upgrade over severson, that he is worth the assets? a year later he is ufa and the devils could still consider to replace severson with dumba, if he wasn't extended by minnesota or the team he got traded to.

I don't think Dumba makes sense stylistically.

And there's still a possibility NJ drafts Jiricek or Nemec, who have similar qualities with team control and a prime coinciding with the team's real window.
