Less well attended than last year, it’s at the Honda Center, maybe fewer people due to Verbeek talking yesterday.

Starts at 11, wall of text to follow after the event.

Ducks Migration 2025

Teats

  • Event at Honda center to show off the construction going on. Perhaps tongue in cheek. Perhaps not.
  • Thanks to fans for showing up through the rebuild.
  • Valuable experience getting to where every game matters is good for young kids.
  • Short term gains and long term improvements.
  • Over .500 since Trouba.
  • Team resilience night to night, not seeing blowouts and giving up as in previous seasons.
  • Record # of 21 and under players
  • 24ish cohort also special (LaCombe, Zegras, etc)
  • AHL tram improved has won 17 of 20, best record since all start break
  • Draft - 9 picks, including first 3 rounds
  • OC Vibe parking structures level 1-4 finished, 5-6 75% done.
  • We’re pouring $1M concrete per day!
  • 60% more parking capacity for games.
  • 5700 seat concert hall currently under construction along with large dining hall area being started between west parking and Honda center.
  • East parking lot now being started now as well.
  • Attendance levels up
  • Twice as many sellouts as last year
  • Merchandise $’s up, you suckers
  • Victory+ plugged, up 150% up on linear viewing, +300% on streaming.

Hayward and Verbeek

  • Orange alliance questions
    • Recap trade deadline
      • Fabbri and Dumoulin only free agents, Fabbri has a broken bone in hand out at least another 3 weeks.
      • Dumoulin - struggled on trading him. Decided after Vancouver loss to trade him, wants to have Mintyukov and Zellweger on ice every night.
      • Wants young guys to understand what this type of run to try to get into the playoffs is like. Learn the pressure and how to handle it.
      • Mentioned the Verbeek young playoff run experience. Winning a cup is HARD. Need to believe they CAN win every night, and he feels this group now does.
    • In what ways has the team met/not met expectations?
      • Accountability is crucial. To system, culture and each other.
      • Last year was culture shock.
      • This year understood systems and embraced them.
      • Great strides in 5v5
      • Improvement needed in special teams, would be at last 5 games better in standings if special teams better.
      • Best special teams league wise have been doing it 7-8 years - familiarity and trust.
      • Will be a process.
    • Development of young players, LaCombe and Carlsson in particular. Where do you think we are on timeline?
      • Uncomfortable chuckle
      • Took 6-7 years for his Devils team
      • Young players - it’s like a roller coaster, up and down.
      • 2nd year players don’t understand that it gets HARDER because the better they are the more the other team focuses them.
      • Magical age is 23. See LaCombe.
      • Leo hasn’t been as good as last year, at least partially because tougher competition.
      • Need to develop businesslike approach - always practice individual skills, plays, etc.
    • improving the team - what type of offseason adds?
      • Says he already tampered mentioning a specific player yesterday.
      • Needs better team defense
      • Young guys need to step up offensively.
      • Top 6 forward is goal.
    • Vatrano contract discussion - will we see more?
      • Mitigates tax advantage of no state tax franchises
      • Sounded washy washy about it
      • Players often resistant to different structures
      • Tired of listening to agents say we need to pay more due to taxes
    • Zegras - game and development?
      • Nervous chuckle
      • 2 huge steps - competitive, work ethic
      • Would have said if you told him there would be a suspension and a fight he’d say you were nuts
      • Skilled and vision are his baseline
      • Defense and competitive - never been asked to do prior, still a process, has made huge strides
    • Gauthier - what does he need to add?
      • Had a lot he can add
      • Doesn’t realize how fast he can skate. Can blow right around people, needs to do it more.
      • Hardest thing for college kids is schedule. Used to a 40 game schedule. Travel and every other day games is hard physically and mentally.
      • 4 nations break energized him
      • Protecting the puck better
      • Needs to learn better when to pass and when to shoot
      • Just scratching the surface of what he can do.
    • Other players which a shot for next year?
      • Nesterenko will be called up at some point, doing very well.
      • Colangelo has taken NHL step
      • Luneau is doing something no other rookie defenseman has done with points in the AGL ever
      • Hinds making steps
      • Gaucher making steps
      • Sennecke making steps. Will take time with him, needs to put on a lot of strength and muscle.
      • Solberg, Traff, Petterson
      • Will take time
    • Summer contracts -youth
      • Prefers bridge contracts. No pressure on kids to get better with huge contracts, and allows team to evaluate who they are.
      • 2-3 year bridge, then a 7-8 year contract.
    • Bromberg and Holloway offer sheets - will that become common?
      • Doesn’t know.
      • Doesn’t like picking fights with a lot of youth coming along.
      • We have cap space to protect us.
      • Other teams may feel otherwise.
    • Moore and Galimov - sign this year
      • Moore will be signing after his season and will play in both San Diego and get a couple games in Anaheim
      • Feels Moore has untapped offensive ability.
      • Will be in San Diego the next 3 weeks.
      • Didn’t discuss Galimov
    • Goaltending
      • Top 5 tandem in league
      • Dostal will be re-signed, will discuss in offseason
      • will not trade Gibson unless it makes sense for Ducks and makes us better.
    • What would make NHL better
      • “I can’t answer that” - officiating, obviously
      • Things GI needs to be clarified.
      • Likes the European system of player in crease resulting in an immediate whistle.
      • Hazy says Perry disagrees.
      • Verbeek pronounces it “Min-took-off”
    • Any rule changes being considered?
      • There’s rules, he hasn’t really looked at list.
    • 4 Nations - what did Leo say?
      • Hasn’t talked to Leo, just watching him
      • Wanting Leo to see how the top players played and more importantly prepare
      • Thought he was very good in the game he played in
      • Realized that he CAN compete at that level.

Great write-up @Ducks DVM . Tough to know without being there but feel like he's been a little underwhelmed with Leo, not really disappointed per se but thought he would've taken more of a step this year. seems like he was sort of implicating overall preparation and compete level needing to improve a bit which i agree with. This is a big offseason for him, needs to improve his fitness a lot.

I didn’t get the impression that he was disappointed, I got the impression that he just thought he was typical for his age.

Thanks for the update and organized breakdown!

  • I find it odd that Verbeek said Z wasn't being taught to play defense because he's been benched before for not playing defense with Eakins.
  • Glad Verbeek identified that Sennecke needs a lot of strength and muscle, meaning taking their time with him.
  • Taking time seems the MO now with the prospects since Verbeek has populated too many of them at the AHL and NHL levels.
  • Great news about Moore getting signed!!!

He specifically said they were going to have to treat him like Carlsson for the same reasons. He’s too thin and too little muscle.

Verbeek is expecting 18, 19, and 20-year olds to all be like Mac physically to play a specific way Verbeek wants him to play. Yet, Verbeek's oblivious that he saw Carlsson play more invigorated with his countrymen at the 4-Nations. I get that youths need to put on weight, but Verbeek is just ramming it down their throats to get there yesterday when it probably takes several years of muscle training to get there.

As much as I loved both Michkov and Demidov as prospects, with the way the Galimov situation has unfolded and Pat’s reaction to it, it’s become obvious to me (at least more than it ever was) at this point that with the history of the organization, we are never gonna take a swing on a Russian prospect in the top 10 that is playing in the KHL.

You mean not drafting a Russian prospect playing in Russia in the earlier rounds. We drafted Russian Mintyukov 10th OA because he was playing on NA ice in the CHL. I think when both Thrun and LaCombe returned for the senior season, Verbeek got gun shy about drafting NCAA bound players in the top-4 rounds. And when Thrun spurned Verbeek, it solidified not picking an NCAA bound player in the top 4 rounds.

Murray Drafting NCAA'ers in top-4 rounds
2019
Rd 1 Zegras
Rd 2 LaCombe
Rd 4 Thrun

2020
Rd 2 Colangelo
Rd 3 Moore

2021
Rd 3 Pastujov (Murray helped changed his mind to go to the CHL route)
Rd 4 Lopina

Verbeek Drafting NCAA'ers in the top-4 rounds
2022
none

2023
none

2024
none

In a way, picking mostly CHL players in the late 1st round to 4th round means we only own their rights for two seasons. The NCAA and European draftees get four years to be signed. Which means they get more time to develop.

As for Galimov, he only reported what transpired which was the org didn't even contact him until this season when his offense blew up.

The Z comments are really promising for the folk wanting him to stay. I'm indifferent, I realize what he can provide to the team, hope he does put it together obviously, and have personally seen a lot of growth. PV really does compliment him, i'm hoping its sincere and we can build around him and the rest of our current group.
