Working under the assumption that the Habs are buyers and the Jets are sellers at the deadline, what would it cost to acquire Stafford?

2017 1st and prospect?

Think he'd fit perfectly on a third line in Montreal.

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gallagher
Lehkonen - Galchenyuk - Radulov
Stafford - Desharnais - Shaw
Danault - Mitchell - Byron

That's three solid lines with a fourth line that can contribute.

In your scenario if the Jets are sellers at the deadline one of the factors in that would most likely be a lack of production from Stafford. So my question is why would the Habs pay such a premium for a fringe 2nd line rental?

Stafford is borderline waivers material, that would be a robbery.

Because he's a guy that's scored between 15-20 goals a year since he's been in the league, he would fit into the Habs system nicely, he adds size and some grit to the third line, and gives the Habs another weapon on the second power play wave.

I'm just trying to gauge the value, I'm not saying that's the cost. You have to factor in that there aren't many quality players going to be UFAs in 2017 as well, definitely looks to be a sellers market.

Umm sure!!

I don't think he get's a 1st, as much as I would love that.. However he is in a contract year and could very well play himself into warranting that kind of return, however unlikely that may be.

1st round pick? maybe future consideration so he can play on our AHL team, he doesn't have a spot on our roster.

Thomas Vanek at the peak of his career (or near it) cost a second and a prospect. The market on rentals hasn't varied very much from year to year. I would never in a million years trade a 1st for that caliber of player. If you're dealing a first it better be a REALLY good forward or someone signed beyond this year.

A second could be possible, if he improves from his current form. So... maybe, maybe not. Definitely not going to be worth the package in the OP.

Yeah, a 3rd rounder that turns conditionally into a 2nd rounder depending on playoff performance could in my opinion be fair. He's not going to get a 1st rounder unless he goes into 30 goal form or something.

A 2nd or 3rd would probably get it done.

I have no idea what the market for rentals will look like this year but I would try to target someone else if Stafford's play so far this year continues.

2nd Rd pick is all is needed. Decent 3rd liner that can score goals.

Vanek went for very little. Didn't Gaustad fetch a first one year? Didn't Dominic Moore fetch a 2nd on 3 or 4 different occasions? Ladd got a first and a decent NHL-ready prospect last year despite his play dropping off a cliff and Chicago having no hope of re-signing him.

I agree it's extremely unlikely Stafford goes for more than a second, maybe a second and an underwhelming prospect, but deadline prices are anything but set.

lol OP good thing u aint our GM, You would just give away picks for free.

Not at all, I just don't know the value and assumed it would be high in a year that there aren't many big name UFAs that are available.

Just testing the waters and seeing what others thought his value might be. I have no idea but it's fun to see what others think.
