NHL Draft lottery race II - Bruins locked into 5th before ping pong balls.

Desnoyers vs Hagens if you're on the clock seems like an interesting spot. Now granted I don't believe for a second that they'd pass on Hagens. But it's interesting to the rest of us.
I'm running to take Hagens every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And I love Desnoyers as a player. He just doesn't have nearly the upside that Hagens has.

100%. The kid is a menace and people are just looking for reasons not to pick the "small" kid. And he's in line with many other top players in the NHL size wise anyway.
One would think of all fan bases Bruins fans would be sick of overrating size. Some of our biggest free agent signing and draft misses have all been predicated on size in recent years.

FWIW I don’t see Hagens as an option for Boston anyway. Nashville needs a center and he’s likely to be there for the taking and I don’t think they are as stubbornly shortsighted as Boston about drafting “big centers”.

Well lets just wait and see who they draft. Just maybe the Bruins like another player more than Hagens when they draft. Or maybe not ??? There is many factors that go into selection by any team, and size is one, as it should be . Lets see who is available when they draft

This is an interesting debate IMO.

You pick top 5 in the draft and you think size should be a factor? Why?

you know size does factor into all levels of player evaluation tho, right? It may be a bit imbalanced with some folks, but that's not a Bruins or Bruins fan thing specifically

It’s Hagens for me. Wouldn’t really give it much of a second thought tbh

More draft content for ya because why not. Draft starts at 2:15:

a bit outdated because he has flyers picking 4th but interesting he thinks Desnoyers will go 4th, that definitely makes me think the Bruins will grab him over Hagens at 4th mainly because his stock is rising and I can completely see them organizationally wanting another guy like Bergeron

Somebody have some pads for Rayzor? The difference between fourth and sixth is so large. My projections:

San Jose: Misa
Chicago: Schaefer
Nashville: Martone
Boston: Hagens
Seattle: Desnoyers
Philadelphia: Frondell (I think they are still into drafting big)
Buffalo: Eklund
Pittsburgh: McQueen

Schaefer is the only one that really stands out for me as potentially dropping to fourth or fifth. There are some high value centers here.

No way Schaefer goes 4th, none.

I do, so should many other things .I am only going to say players are fighting for every inch of ice and as a general rule the bigger stronger player has the advantage. The better skater also has an advantage. The player with the higher hockey I Q also has the advantage. Many ,many factors go into a hockey player being successful. I will not discuss this further because I do not think we should be in this thread.

Hagens or Desnoyers eh. As usual, I will be the contrarian and say Desnoyers. Desnoyers has a much lower floor than Hagens, but Desnoyers has everything, except blazing speed. Lots of layers to his game. Most project Desnoyers as a second line center. One analytics guy even thinks third line.
However, I think Desnoyers has many aspects of his game to lean on, even at the NHL level. Comparables do not always work with players who lack one thing, like him, but I would say a slower Kopitar or Kopitar's reach and style with Krejci's speed.

Hagen's reminds me a great deal of Seguin-a slightly shorter, slightly slower Seguin.
I consider Seguin a mild disappointment given his skills....

What is so bad about the comparison, explain, if you actually can.

Well, the obvious is that Tyler Seguin is Tyler Seguin and James Hagens is James Hagens. They’re nothing alike. Trying to make these comparisons puts false expectations on the player being compared to the NHL star.

Secondly, you’re trying to say Hagens is like Seguin, but he’s smaller and not as fast. No shit lmao.

Seems like you just wanted to make an excuse to say Seguin disappointed you.

A native of Trangsund, Sweden, Frondell has had a unique draft year. In ten games with Djurgardens IF’s J20 team, Frondell had seven points. Solid production, but for a potential top-five pick in his draft year, you would hope for more. Where things get interesting however, is that in 29 games in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second-tier of Professional Hockey in Sweden, Frondell put up 25 points! Frondell earned Rookie of the Year honors in HockeyAllsvenskan, the same league where NHL superstars David Pastrnak, William Nylander, and Elias Pettersson played during their draft years. He also has three goals and an assist in 11 playoff games, as Djurgardens IF is trying to get promoted to the Swedish Hockey League, the top-flight of Swedish pro hockey, and will also represent Team Sweden at the U18 World Junior Championship, which begins on April 23rd in Texas.

While Frondell is not the biggest prospect in this draft class at 6’0 “and 196 lbs, he uses his size to his advantage in the offensive zone. Frondell has one of the best shots in the 2025 draft class and creates opportunities for both himself and his teammates with powerful one-timers. He’s also one of the younger prospects in this class and will not turn 18 until May. This makes Frondell’s season in HockeyAllsvenskan all the more impressive. Frondell also boasts a strong two-way game, which could make him a fit with a Bruins team that seems to prioritize that style of play. Between his strong Hockey IQ, offensive game, and two-way play, it’s not hard to imagine a world where he could be a first-line center in the NHL.

So, where do the scouts rank Frondell? Most scouts have him as a consensus top-10 pick, with some having him in the top five. Bob McKenzie of TSN has him fifth in this class, while Craig Button has him at number four. Frondell’s draft stock was sky high at the beginning of the season, took a bit of a dip after his time in the J20 Nationell, but has since recovered. He should hear his name called early this June and perhaps it will be by the Bruins.
