Just realized that Hamilton is paid 12,6 million his year and had 22 goals (franchise record) and 74 points for the Devils last year.

Yet you rarely hear him talked about. Will he live up to the salary, should he be getting Norris consideration? Why is he so far under the radar that i was shocked to hear both about his salary and the fact that he was one of the highest scoring d-men last season?

Edit:

Currently has 3 goals and 5 points in the Devils first 4 games (62 goal pace..........lol).

dougie has some nice qualities. but he is not norris worthy as he is not good enough defensively to be considered.

his cap hit is a bit high for what he offers. paying him now more and less in the last two contract years, when the trade protection gets lower, makes him easier to move if needed for cap purpose.

I don’t see how he is easier to move. He has a 12.6 mil salary next year to, then after that a 10.5 mil signing bonus summer of 2025 and a 7.5 mil signing bonus in 2026…not A lot of owners want to be shelling that signing bonus money out in July…for an aging d man to

He’s going to be a very good player during that time, and they’re highly likely not to need to move him. No one cares about salary, it’s about AAV until then. After those bonuses are when you’d expect him to start dropping off if he’s going to. The last three years are easier to move him if you have to.

He’s living up to his AAV right now, when it matters most. With the cap going up he’s going to have a “normal” contract by the time it’s done. He’s already three years into the contract. He’s already lived up to a significant part of it.

he has a nmc for this and next season. so discussing a hamilton trade is useless. in the summer 25 he has a huge signing bonus of 10+m. once this is paid his last three contract year only cost 15m in total which is very reasonable if he hasn't declined massively. the cap hit and 10 team trade list might still make him difficult to move.

Actually salary means very little, unless you're looking to move a player - otherwise it's all about the cap hit.

Hamilton's contract is interesting in the way it is split between signing bonuses & base salary as well as the annual amounts. It's split nearly 50/50 between signing bonuses and salary, with most of salary portion coming this year and next (when they presumably though escrow amounts would be lower).

He has a full NMC clause through the end of next season, and I don't think the Devils have any interest in moving him before then anyway. After that, his contract becomes much easier to move if necessary. Once he gets paid out his $10.55M signing bonus in the summer of 2025, he is only owed $14.65M for his final 3 seasons over which he'll be 32-34 years old. He has 25 goals and 79 points over 86 games since the start of last season and finished 6th in Norris voting last season, so he's currently living up to his $9M cap hit and the Devils don't really have to worry about moving him yet.

Dougie's vision, shot, and puck skills are all top tier, and he's more physical than was advertised. That being said, his lack of footspeed really hurts him and prevents him from being a top-tier Norris level defender. Not really a problem in his own zone since his positioning is usually decent/passable, the issue is in transition. If he gets caught flatfooted at the offensive point it's almost always a breakaway against. He's also prone to lazy stick penalties, but I think that's mostly a function of his lack of speed.

But he gives the Devils something they sorely lacked, and pairing him with a mobile stay-at-home D in Siegenthaler is a really great compliment. He's been worth his deal so far and likely will for the foreseeable future. And as he starts to age out, his contract becomes much more moveable.

with basically every team spending to the cap nowadays moving big money contracts will not be easy. if hamilton wants to stay his 10 team trade clause can negate all potential suitors, as he can simply put the teams with a highly regarded highly paid rhd on the list. those teams hardly will trade for him.

Dougie is awesome. Real dollar salaries are all maniupulated anyway, not much use in looking at them when evaluating a player.

You guys are set up perfectly long term on defence.

Bridging L Hughes and adding Nemec all lines up perfectly with Dougie's contract. Great cap management by NJ.

Real money only matters if you're planning on moving a player and NJ isn't planning on moving Hamilton any time soon.

Man, I love Dougie. Had a rough first season after breaking his jaw and not getting his feet under him, but he balled out last year and has picked up right where he left off this year. Is he Larry Robinson? No. But he’s delivered on what’s been expected of him.

Dougie isn’t a shut down type d man at all, and that’s okay. He happens to be one of the best shooting d men in the entire league, and he is thriving on the offensive devils. He would need to lead the league in scoring to get Norris attention though, his defensive game isn’t up to par with some of the other #1’s around the league. Could possibly lead in goals this season, his shot is looking deadly as ever.

The only way Dougie Hamilton will get Norris nods is if the NJD win a cup and Hamilton wins a Conn Smythe by going ppg in the playoffs. Then in the following season people will finally start considering him for Norris.
Alternatively if he has a 100 point season like Karlsson.
I think that's what it will take at this point in his career.

I think there are guys with better defense who also put up some pretty gaudy numbers - a league with Makar and Fox probably doesn’t have room for Hamilton to get a Norris nod. But outside of year one after the injuries, Hamilton has lived up to his deal. He’s still one of the better offensive D in the league.

Ok, so he has 12.6mil salary this season, but had 6.3mil salary the past two seasons. Did you make a thread about his low salary back then, too?

It's a 9mil AAV contract, and I'd talk about that rather than the salary, which is all over the place.

Because you live under a rock? And nobody should be getting Norris consideration on Oct 23rd.

He’s exactly what this team needs and I think the contract will age just fine. He’s not going to get much slower lol. His incredible shot and ability to find the open ice is a perfect fit for the young devils speed. He’s lazy around the net at times and he can’t make it back when he’s low in the offensive zone (which is often) but he scores more than enough to negate that.

Yes OP. If Doug Hamilton maintains his pace of 62 goals this season, he should win the Norris and will be worth his salary.

If not, then no.

His AAV of 9 mil is really all that matters, and he is absolutely worth that right now. As with any long term contract given to a UFA, could the last two years of the contract be rough? Sure. But I also think Hamilton’s game may age well. He is already is slow as hell. Besides his shot, I don’t think he has one other physical asset or ability that could even be considered above average. His strength is being able to read the play and chose when and how to jump in. Those assets don’t always decline in the same way speed does. No one will ever call him a shutdown Dman, but the dude can produce points, and that’s what he’s paid to do.
