Does wax for your stick work?

I was in the pro shop and saw all this wax stuff for sticks. Husband says he doesn't use it. This is also from a guy who doesn't like his skates sharpened so when I "surprised" him (I think with a 'fastcut'), he was surprised all right! Maybe the wax is an individual preference also?

Does it really work? Is it worth it? Do you all use it?

I use it, but I don't put much on the blade. Some guys put so much wax on the blade, it's ridiculous.

I use it so the tape on my blade doesn't peel off or fall off. Snow doesn't build up on your blade as much.

IMO wax is the biggest rip-off in hockey. I have never used it but I can't see how it could be very useful. I also heard that candle wax would be just as good anyways =/

It helps keep your tape from soaking in so much water and turning into a wet kleenex. I use it if the tape i have is low quality but a good brand will usually hold together for 1 ice time for me.

That's what I use most of the time. I did buy some wax, but guys on the team always use it, and never remember to put it back in my bag. They do that with tape, too.

It does the same thing

I just by high end stick tape and don't have problems with it. $5-7 buck a roll, gets pricy but the tape is amazing. Yeah yeah some people are like oh tape is tape it's all the same, no it isn't.

From someone who has tried many different things, such as baby-powder on the blade like Gretzky used to have, to absolutely nothing, I must say that true, "Ice Wax" is the best thing for your blade. Not only does it lengthen the life of the tape, it makes handling the puck a lot easier as well, because it's sticky. Candle wax does the exact opposite, unlike what some people think. It slips and slides very easy, making controlling the puck a lot tougher.

Trust me, give it a try. You'll find it quite beneficial.

It repels water, which makes the tape last longer, and can also prevent snow buildup. I sometimes like a little on the bottom of the blade after taping to prevent wear. I used to put a ton of wax on and then use a heat gun to melt it into the tape, but the wax would get all over inside my car and there wasn't much benefit. I do use Andover tape which has a lot of friction, so I'm not in need of a lot of additional friction.

Yeah, it's the type of tape and how the person tapes it.

I prefer to not have wax, as i feel the puck a little better with only tape. (i also play with a bare heel, only tape the front half)

Plus i like having something to do on the bench (clearing the snow off) ;)

Must have alot of time to do that. I don't have enough time to clear the snow off. I usually scrape the blade on the edge of the boards quickly in between plays ;)

So true. I still used to apply a bit of candle (by rubbing, not melting) to my tape anyway. It really does save the tape and just a little rubbed-on wax and I never had to tap any snow off, nor did I loose any touch while handling the puck.

I don't use tape anymore, I have been waxing my naked blades for 5 years now. Being a surfer this came naturally. I actually invented it and should get some royalties. I just play in a beer league and this works ok for me.

Uhh... people have been waxing their blades longer than 5 years... I don't see how on earth you could of invented that, or that was just bad sarcasm I don't know.
And seriously no tape? just wax... can you even shoot?
I bet if you took off some of that wax you'll shoot much better.

Crayons too if you have them. Its really not worth it though. Your going to have to re-tape it anyway regardless of whether there is wax or not.

Dr. Zog's Sex Wax is the way to go...its scented! Seriously...its scented.

I've used both candle wax, Dr. Zogs (you get some weird looks when you open your bag and it smells like bubblegum though...so be ready for that) and nothing and the wax seems to make a difference. Dr. Zogs just happens to be the brand I had in my bag.

I used to tape my stick every game and then wax it up, but I would still get cuts and the tape would come off. Now I only have to tape my stick just about every third game and no longer use wax. The tape I use now is great. I ordered a bulk box of it from Howies. The tape is strong and doesn't break up. It cost me less per roll too.

No wax. I tape, then I heat it up with a big lighter or over the BBQ. The heat seems to melt the tape glue so when it cools it has a stronger hold. I've never had any issues with peeling and can keep the same tape on for months' worth of ice time.

completely agree... i have used candle wax, "sex wax" and ice wax... i find ice wax to do exactly what this gentleman said. candle wax will make it a little harder to control the puck. TBH, you will only feel a difference if you are good at puck handling and have a good feel for the puck on your stick.

it's good for beeping ice off the blade
dr zogs is the way to go
pina colada haha... you seriously get tempted to eat it
same thing as candle wax but for 3 bucks a chunk (size of a puck) you really can't go wrong
