He's a lock for the HHOF.

Simple math is: the top 40 players in any given decade will eventually get in.

Over the past 25 years, only 21 players have 1000 points. Backstrom is one of them.

Backstrom is 18th in scoring since 2000.

Soo... does anyone have a compelling reason as to why Backstrom is not one of the top 40 players during the decade of his peak? And can you name the 40 players you would put ahead of him?
Well usually one is from a previous generation, to start with.

Caps fan voting No. I think he was on pace to make it in, likely to end up near the top 50 in career points and the 2nd highest scoring Swede ever behind Sundin's 1349 points, but injuries cut his career too short. He had 980 points at the end of his last semi-healthy season, 2020-21 at age 34, and was still close to point per game. It wouldn't have been too much of a stretch to finish around 1200.

As is, there are only 8 guys who are eligible for the Hall, have more points than his, and aren't in. (Fleury, Dave Taylor, Damphousse, Nicholls, Tkachuk, Whitney, Verbeek and Bobby Smith.)

There are a lot of players already in the Hall who didn't have major individual awards.

I'm generally a "small hall" guy..

I love Nicky but I don’t think he should. He has no individual awards to his name although I think he was a Selke-level center at his best in 2016-17.

He might get in since they’ve allowed guys like Shea Weber to get in, but to me the HHOF should be reserved for players of exception.

4 players get in each year.

For the simple sake of math, lets say what a player does in a 10 year span is more or less what gets them in or not.

Who are the 40 better players than Backstrom that had a better 10 year stretch than Backstroms 2008-2018?

I'm pointing out that Backstrom was clearly one of the top 40 players for a solid 10 year stretch, which mathematically makes him HHOF-tier.
Up to 4 players make it, it's been 3 on average.

If Getzlaf gets in then Backstrom has no excuse, but I don't think either should. We're diluting it every year with choices like the last few classes.
Getzlaf is absolutely a hall of famer. Probably the best player from the 2003 draft.

Shea Weber has a much more accomplished career than Backstrom. A Norris finalist 3 times and was seen as a top 5 defenseman for multiple seasons, can't say the same for Backstrom.

Weber is by no means a weak induction like you implied.

He has over 1k points and has won at every level.

He should get in, the Sedins are in, Alfie is in, Getzlaf is going in...

As an Oilers fan I've become completely jaded by the HHOF selections once they added Kevin Lowe. Great player, sure; but hall of famer...no chance.:thumbd:

Backstrom has a much better regular season and playoff PPG while actually winning a Cup
Cups are a team award. I don’t rank Maroon higher than Hart and Art Ross winners because he’s been on 3 Stanley Cup winning rosters.
How does Backstron have better reg seasons than those two…?
