So, I was surfing the web, looking for interesting bits of facts that will make me appear to be a fascinating person when I bring them up in conversations (hopefully resulting in people wanting to be my friend), when I realized something.
I don't think anyone has failed to notice that the point producing from star players is low this season. We don't have anyone on pace to break the 100 point barrier this season, and in fact, it doesn't look like anyone will be particularly close.
However, there are currently 7 players (8 if you include Perry) who are on pace to get 40 goals or more, including two players who are on pace to score 50 goals or more.
Ovechkin
Nash
Seguin
Tarasenko
Stamkos
Pavelski
Kane
(Perry)
Of these players, all of them (except for Kane) have either hit 40 goals before, or are known as quality young goal scorers.
So, why do we have so many high goal scoring seasons going on, while the leader in total points is on pace to finish below the Art Ross winners from the Dead Puck Era?
Did the league suddenly stop handing out assists?
Is the improved team D making it harder for playmakers to rack up the points?
Do we simply not have as many elite playmakers in the league these days?
Is the OP overreacting to a small sample size, and this will change as the season progresses, and/or this season will be an outlier?
Aliens?
