Part of it to me is how early it is in the season, I'm watching more hockey now because I'm just excited to have it back, but the amount of advertising is already starting to grate on me. The board ads look terrible, the jersey ads are worse, the little commercials that play during icings are the worst.
Basically, while right now my viewing habits are about the same as always, it's been a much worse broadcast experience for every game I've watched and I'm less inclined to seek out other games to watch because of it. I think over time, maybe over multiple seasons, maybe over this one, I will probably just watch my own team's games and that's it. Even that will be worn away as the amount of advertising increases.
If they did one stretch of games with advertising like it used to be in say, the 1980s and then one stretch of games like it is now, I think a lot more people would be decrying it. As it is, they've frog in the cooking potted us so to speak. It's been so gradual that people say they don't notice, but I suspect it really is a lesser experience than it used to be, for all of us.
