Did Dustin Brown ruin Hertl's Career?

Hertl was looking like he would be a superstar in the league at 19. He looked like he would be at least in the 5 to 10 range, and possibly top 5 in the NHL.

He was posting mindblowing stats, doing ridiculous things, like scoring one of the best NHL goals ever

And then he ran into Dustin Brown. This season he has 18 points in 41 games. So did Dustin Brown ('s hit) ruin Hertl's potential and career?

A lot of rookies start out hot and then cool off as the season progresses. I don't think Hertl would have sustained his numbers pre-injury.

I'd answer the question, but I can't get past the over the top hyperbole in the OP.

Top 5 player? One of the best NHL goals ever? Really?

Hertl never had the potential.. he literally just had 4 goals in a game and everybody expected him to be an insanely good player after 1 night

You know who else has had a 4 goal game? Jiří Dopita and Jan Bulis, who are both nobodies. Hertl is going to join that list of nobodies.

Lol for real. Hertl plays half a season and all of a sudden he's bound to be a top 5 player in the league.

Agreed. I feel like there are two questions that can be answered here:

To the OP's no. Hertl didn't have that potential, so failing to meet those expectations isn't due to Brown.

When you remove the exaggerated description of Hertl's potential I think there is another question there, which is could Brown have hurt Hertl's development moving forward. That one, I think, is possible.

Guy with a career high 46 points in 82 games was posting mind-blowing stats? What am I missing here?

Is he much different than Sam Bennett? Bennett also had a four goal game featuring a highlight-reel beauty as a rookie, and also fell on hard times in the subsequent season(s).

This happens to a lot of players.

Selective memory. Pre-injury Hertl had better numbers than Matthews and was the heavy favorite in the Calder race pre-Brown hit.

Not all Calder winners are superstars but the majority become elite top end talent.

He might be having a down offensive year but I really don't see anything wrong with Hertl out there.

His whole team is having a down offensive year sans Burns.

It's not about just 4 goal game. He was heavy Calder favorite based on play and cumulative stats. His stats were more than that game.

It's not like he played a high-explosiveness speed game before the injury. It's been a road back for sure, but 'ruined' is hyperbole of the highest order.

Development isn't always exponential or linear. Hell, it isn't even always positive.

We see rookies start off hot all the time. We also see them consistently slow down.

Yeah, Hertl lost the Calder due to that hit for sure.
I think the next season he wasn't quite the same either (knee injuries can take a while to recover 100%, was both MCL and PCL).

Then I think he just got settled into more of a checking line role by the coach?

He wasn't the same after the hit. His numbers pre hit are very high. Calder favorite numbers.

25 points in 37 games = .675 PPG = 55 point season.

Last year, he was good for 46 points in 81 games.

Yep, completely ruined, off the map.

oorrrrr 37 games is a smaller sample size with more variance including debut adrenaline, a different role, etc.

Agreed with this.

Maybe he's slightly off but still an effective player.

"Ruined" is a guy like Heatley or Marc Staal. Just totally not NHL players after being injured.
