Rumor: Devils to sign F Arseni Gritsyuk to ELC

24 year old Russian. Does he still fall under ELC?

If/when he signs, it'll be a 1 year ELC due to CBA rules since Gritsyuk is 24. I'm guessing that it'd be registered for this season which would make him eligible to join the team immediately. If that is the case, he'd be RFA (without offer sheet rights) this summer.

On a side note, European (trained) players have to sign ELCs up to age 28(?) as I understand it. So somebody like Roman Cervenka signed an ELC with Calgary when he signed at age 26. Guys like Vadim Shipachyov (30 when he signed) or Evgeni Medvedev (33) weren't required to sign ELCs.

Devils are more or less locked into their playoff spot, so we'll see if Gritsyuk gets here in time for a regular season game. Not sure I'd want to throw him into the deep end immediately with the playoffs.

Having a very respectable season in the KHL. Will be interesting to see how he does in NA.

Hopefully it’s for this season and not next.

He would hopefully be a nice little boost of offensive depth for the playoffs

I really hope he's worked on his all-around game enough where he can be plugged into the lineup. The Devils badly needs some middle-six talent that can maybe score. But not if he plays defense like Gusev. Legit have no idea but whatever, a lot of Russians stay there til their mid-20s on purpose because they have no interest in playing for league minimum and will come over when they can play for 2M (which I hope is what he will get next year considering he has no experience and Devils might be up against the cap).

I mean Russia presumably in as good a mood about this sort of thing right now for this to happen right (given that his contract doesn't technically end until the end of May)

So?

Contradicts himself.

We'll have to wait the official news and stop speculating it seems.

Contradicts himself or updates based on new information?

I haven't heard of this guy before either, but he seems rather dialed into the KHL and I doubt it's a cut and dry situation.

For all we know, Gritsyuk might want to sign his ELC at this point but SKA may not allow him.

Exactly.

So why report he'll sign soon and then backtrack?

Maybe he's not that dialed in, or just reports things too fast before confirming with SKA sources.

Let's just assume all of these Twitter guys don't really know much until a official report comes in.

These Russian players will all be playing here next season though, right? So we will get to see them.

You can assume whatever you want - don't think there's any harm in posting this stuff and letting people decide what to believe or not believe.

My original post regarding him was not vouching for his accuracy as I am not at all familiar with his work, but simply pointing out that if you have Friedman and all the NJ beat writers as followers then I doubt it's just some random troll on Twitter making stuff up and he probably has some type of track record on reporting on the KHL.

Maybe his connections aren't that great - who knows. In his defense though, his original report that he's "Hearing that..." Gritsyuk will sign his ELC deal soon was never portraying it being a done deal. Take it up with him on Twitter if you have a problem with how this has unfolded.

I won't.

He just does not look reliable.

When a guy like Friedman or McKenzie reports something, it is because they confirmed it with sources.

It is what distinguishes them from sketchy people on Twitter that reports everything they hear... Like this guy. I was right to point out he is a sketchy source.

OK, don't pat yourself on the back too hard.
