Nashville - Pekka Rinne, Ryan Ellis, Kevin Fiala

New Jersey - Cory Schneider, Jon Merrill

Nashville could be one of the best teams in the league with Schneider in net. It hurts losing Ellis but they would still have 3 above average D. Fabbro can come up in a couple of seasons. Improving this much in goal makes Nashville a very complete team. Merrill replaces d depth.

Jersey gets an under performing big name goalie. Can sell tickets but they can begin to focus on a rebuild. Their current roster isn't anywhere close to a Stanley cup they are wasting the talents of one of the best goalies in the league. Fiala can step in and add a high upside prospect. Ellis combines with Hall and Henrique to form a solid core that all played junior in Windsor.

Fire away.

Cant see the devils trading schineder unless its an overpayment. Terrible trade

The add isn't significant enough for the Devils and doesn't make any sense

Cory Schneider is not for sale.

Why? Having one the best goalies in the league on a rebuilding team just seems wrong to me. Would have gotten better draft picks last two years without him.

I agree that it would have to be a borderline overpayment. But to say he's not for sale seems weird.

We're past the threshold of a tear down. We're much closer to being a playoff team than you seem to think we are.

That's a hilarious overpayment on Nashville's end. Ellis is a great d-man and Fiala is an A prospect. Goalies don't have that value.

Schneider isn't going anywhere and on top of that I think Rinne is the most overrated goalie in the league.

The first big piece a rebuilding team should acquire is a competent goalie, NJ made the right move trading a top 10 pick for one.

I'd like to see how Rinne looks this year before trading our top prospect and a top 4 defenseman along with him.

We didn't miss the playoffs by much last year and we did nothing but improve. This team is a lot closer to the playoffs than fans of other teams realize. Draft picks, this site is obsessed with em and we still got solid picks these last two drafts in Zacha and McCleod in the first round. Most Devils fans are completely against tanking and like the fact the Devils have tried to ice the best team possible, even when the chances of making the playoffs were slim and none. Creates a certain atmosphere within an organization that winning is the only thing that matters. I know most fans of other team probably do not agree, but I wouldn't change a thing but I know plenty of other Devils fans who would agree with me. We've also drafted much better than we have gotten credit for especially beyond the first round the last few years. When you do that you don't need a top 5 pick or higher every year.

He's been one of the worst starters in the league since the 2012-2013 lockout, that's even including the really good season he had in 14-15. That's how mediocre/bad he's been in the other 3 seasons. He's finished.

I do think Schneider does automatically make Nashville a legit contender though. I feel like their goaltending did them no favors in the second round last year and they probably weren't beating Chicago in the 2015 series, but they gave them a hell of a round and Rinne was certainly not one of their best players that round.

This deal isn't good for the Devils. Rinne is signed for like 3 more years? And for almost a million more per year than Schneider is, if I'm not mistaken.

Agree with your premise. NJD are wasting Schneider but they can get more than that for him elsewhere.

Even though we still could get more we're not the trading him. We signed him long term for a reason and no we didn't put a gun to his head, he actually wants to be here. He was the first part of our rebuild and we've done nothing but retool and improve the team around him. Other teams tank for the first overall pick or at least try to, to kickstart a rebuild. We traded for a goalie who's turned out to be better than we ever expected. More than one way to skin a cat.

Trading Schneider because he "hurts" our rebuild, which some people overstate way too much the Devils aren't that far off stop kidding yourselves, is such backwards thinking. Like sure we could trade him and get a few nice prospects/young players but then later when we're ready to compete we have no number 1 goalie. And sure we can pick up a bargain bin guy and hope they play well but I'd rather have arguably a top 3 goalie in the league than that bargain bin guy + whatever we got for Schneider.

The tanking mentality some fans have is so messed up. I get if you're not going to make the playoffs you want to sell your guys and in the back of your mind hope to loss so you get a better draft pick. But there's a clear difference between that and a trade like this which would be taking 17 steps backwards only to have the thought of taking 10 steps forward at a later date.

Yup, three of his last four years have been average at best. Rinne's nothing special I've never understood the hype but I think most hockey fans have caught on to this. The reason for the trade according the OP is to help the "rebuild" but if anything this sets us back. Fiala is a good prospect but if we're gonna trade Schneider I'd expect a better prospect than him. Ellis is a good player stuck behind better defensman but we don't need him. Our defense is set this trade does nothing for me. Nothing to see here.

Not really related to this offer, but what would Nashville want for either Ellis or Ekholm?

I don't see a realistic (fair) scenario where either are dealt. They are on great contracts and both excel in their roles (and could fill in capably on top pairing if needed). The top 6 always needs upgrading but there are other assets that could be used for that.
