Question : Was the goal that Mac had given up....a STOPPABLE goal or NOT-STOPPABLE goal?
I didn’t nail him on it.

It was a back door goal.

He actually got over fast enough that he got his skate on it, but it hit the back of his other skate and went over the line. The Pens feed showed that.

I nailed Jarry on both goals, which (spoiler alert) are the only two goals in the league I’ve counted stoppable today, as I’ve already reviewed the Florida/Tampa game and the two goals so far in the LA/Vegas game that’s currently going on.

The Vatanen goal was a one timer, but goes right past his glove and he was in position for it. There wasn’t even a screen, or at least he shouldn’t have been screened.

A wraparound goal is almost never a good one on a goalie, unless it goes off a skate.

What an f'n win. :devdance::devdance::devdance:

And what an incredible well-played game by the Devils.

I mean I can say that despite giving up one goal which, if I may quote @Bleedred , was NOT stoppable(though he may disagree), Mac looked like the Mac Pre-Covid in this game.

He was great and kept the Devils in this game, and was the reason it even got to OT.

And Vats scores another goal!

That Murray person is really being a good safety-net for Vats in case things go awry.

Like the pairing as it's been effective....somehow.

Zajac's line looks like he has TWO Colemans on either side (with less scoring, but I digress) of him...and he looks reborn. That line has been absolutely solid and Rango has one hell of a shot.

He should've had a goal(at least one) but rang it off the pipe. Oh well.

But man...Rango can shoot and when he shoots, HE SHOOTS.

Just look at this craziness!

The Hughes line was pretty good in regulation though it looked more like Hughes and Bratt were playing alone than with Palms but that's another argument for another time.

Bratt scores the Bratt-around in OT!!

Zacha and Bratt continue to be wizards with 3-on-3 and open ice.

And may I also say how understated it is of the job Ty Smith did prior to Bratt's OT goal?

He was calm, took a look and saw there was no clear lane to shoot and skated around, and then gave the puck to Zacha who started that whole game-winning sequence.

It was just about the Perfect Road-Game played and Road-win achieved. :towel:

Also, one of the main things I've noticed in this game overall :

Lack of giveaways – Bryce pointed that out in the 2nd intermission.

Devils also weren’t doing that stupid back pass on the PP and guess what, their zone entry was much better.

A+ for the grade.

EDIT : oh damn....I forgot the poll. :shakehead

OKAY.

MY Stars of the game are Mac at #1, Bratt at #2, and Sharangovich at #3(because he just kept firing away and should've had a goal).

I think it was between the 2nd and 3rd period, but Sal had a stat up that Friday we had 22 giveaways where as tonight we had 3.

That's a ridiculous difference.

Bastian has been okay for what he’s been, but McLeod is only here because of where he was drafted. He brings nothing that anyone else can’t.

I’m interested to see if he’s given the edge next year to make the team out of camp or if they just expose him to waivers, where he’ll probably go unclaimed. Think he’s waiver eligible next year.

I’ve been a proponent of putting Merkley in there for a while now. He didn’t do much of anything today, but he a great game yesterday and had 5 shots on goal in a little over 10 minutes of ice time. I don’t ever wanna see Gusev again.

I think mcleod brings some speed, faceoffs which we need, and hitting.

I think this game is a good example of how important physical play is. Palms got cheaply undercut on that one play, and Kulikov took a penalty for lining up Lafferty. Although it was a stupid penalty, I loved it.
I think it changed the game a bit in our favor.

The fact that we have some big boys like maltsev, Shara, mcleod, bastian and merkeley who will bang a bit puts other teams on edge, and they are jumpier with the puck... Less willing to take a hit to make a play, or hold in for an extra second.

I think it is understated how much of our success comes from the fact that we are no longer miles wood, palms, and a bunch of smurfs.

Rust screened him out high on vats goal. That wraparound was stoppable, but the passing play and bratts effort made it a tough chance.

Looking at NJ’s young players suggests to me that until Nico returns and the team can find some wingers that work for Jack they probably have to be comfortable trying to win games like this. Hope the goalie gives them a chance to win 2-1 or 3-2. They aren’t ready to play run and gun or try to get into an open track meet for the most part. To my eyes they have a nice scrappy roster that can be tough to ply against when they skate hard but they lack offensive depth and still lack some offensive cohesion on what should be scoring lines. I really hope they can find wingers for Jack in the offseason.

Pretty solid analysis right here.

The only push back I'd give here is that while we might be lacking higher end talent, especially without Nico, I think we can expect some level of offense from our lower lines. Our "3rd" line scored our regulation goal tonight, and our leading goal scorer this year played on the 4th line tonight.

Too much depends on the offseason and what Fitz does for me to feel this confident. If we have a repeat of last offseason with cap dumps and sitting on 10 mill in cap space I struggle to see it.

Yeah, there are not guarantees. I guess the bottom line is that I really believe Hughes and Bratt are on their way to being elite forwards, and Nico is just about there too, and I believe Blackwood is the real deal and will be the best goaltender in the division.

I agree, Fitz has a lot of work to do. Team needs another goaltender and at least one more veteran winger.

If you read the Penguins's post game thread they're all saying it's a one line team, and they can't get any secondary scoring. If the Kuokkanens and Sharangovichs and Maltsevs can keep up their level of play, NJ will have a very potent supporting attack to back up Hughes, Bratt, and Hischier.

NJ is obviously still very much a work in progress. Until Nico returns and we see what remains post trade deadline there are still changes to be made this season. While the bottom six guys are doing well they will have peaks and valleys and can be expected to provide good defense and matchup capability but not regular scoring. I don’t see the top six getting sorted this season so the team may be forced to try to play scrappy amd close games down the stretch. A healthy MBW should allow them to do that.

His edge work is really incredible. The he mohawk turned around the net is how he could do that wrap around so quickly, no way he could have scored that without it.

That's a ridiculous difference.

Most of this is just that the scorer changed. They probably played better too, I didn't see Saturday's game but it doesn't look great, but the scorer makes a huge difference.

The Devils are credited with 229 giveaways in 17 home games this season. I'm too lazy to open the calculator but that looks like about 13 a game.

The Devils are credited with 95 giveaways in 12 road games this season. This is nearly 8 per game.

Every team has more giveaways at home than on the road and it's just scorer bias.

EDIT: This isn't true, Tampa Bay comedically has 22 giveaways at home and 123 on the road, which means that their home scorer is just not counting them. Giveaways are a trash stat, probably worse than useless.
