I know we are still a month and a half away from the game, but, I keep thinking about the Stadium Series game. Maybe it was the debut of the Islanders jersey last week or the unveiling of the Ducks and Kings jersey’s this week. With each colder day I think more and more what the week leading up to January 26th will be like.
One of the questions I have is, what is the team going to wear? I figured given the logo that was released, it is going to be a retro jersey. I know they are the home team but I was hoping they dust off the old white jersey. I figured that would give the Rangers a chance to wear a dark jersey against NJ and a white jersey against the Islanders who debuted their blue jersey last week. Seems to make sense in my mind.
Another thing that has me wondering is if they will play an alumni game. Rumor has it that NHL preparations will begin the day after the Pinstripe Bowl. This would give the NHL ice gurus plenty of time to get the rink up and ready for whatever festivities they would like. It might be hard to ask the Rangers alumni to play two games (one versus Devils alumni and one against Islanders alumni) so why not a Metro area alumni games? Mix the three teams superstars of yester year and do it pick-up game style. Take players from all three teams, put their stick in a pile at center ice and start separating them to form the teams. Or maybe have two captains (Messier and Stevens??) pick the teams.
I have been thinking and thinking, what would a Devils alumni team roster look like? With the assistance of Wikipedia, I have come up with, what I believe, would be the roster if the Devils were to put a complete team on the ice. Keep in mind, active players are, of course, off limits. Also, age of the player, length of service with the team, and organization cross-over (Devils/Rangers) played a little part in my selections:
Left Wing: Center: Right Wing:
Muller Madden Lemieux
Broten, A Arnott Guerin
Pandolfo Brylin Richer
Peluso Holik McKay
Defenseman: Defenseman:
Stevens Niedermayer
Daneyko Fetisov
Rafalski Driver
Goalies (1 for each period):
Terreri
Resch
Burke
Other options: Broten, N (C), Dowd (C), MacLean (C), Nieuwendyk (C), Rolston (C), Sunderstrom (C), Andreychuk (LW), Shanahan (LW), Zelepukin (LW), Brown (RW), Friesen (RW), Langenbrunner (RW), Mogilney(RW), Sykora (RW), Chambers (D), Velischek (D), Weekes (G)
I guess it may be obvious that I became a fan in 1992/93 as this list is heavy on players from that year on. However, in reviewing the list of players, there weren’t that many players from the teams earlier years that more than 100 games of service with the team. A few drew my interest, but, I figured they might be a little too old too.
I know this list is going to come under heavy scrutiny, as all lists like this tend to. Don’t worry about me, I am ready for it, heck, I even encourage it. I think it would be a great conversation to have. So, let me hear it. Who did I miss? Who is on that shouldn’t be and who should take their place?
