Devils 2021 offseason (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

With the recent trade for Ryan Graves and Bastian selection by Seattle, I have updated my Offseason Plan:

1. Lose Butcher/Johnsson/Bastian to Seattle. CHECK
2. Draft Luke Hughes or Brandt Clarke with #4 overall. (Hopefully Hughes)
3. Trade 28 overall + Kuokkanen/Boqvist + another pick/prospect for Garland, Meier, or Reinhart or another player of similar caliber and age. If no worthwhile deal is to be had, then so be it.
4. Trade Will Butcher
5. Acquire Adam Henrique from the Anaheim Ducks while gaining an asset from Anaheim in the process - perfect mentor and role model for this team, only 3 years left on contract.
6. Free agency:
6a. - Sign Hamilton 7 years, 8-9 million AAV. If not him, sign Larsson or Savard.
6b. - Sign one of Kulikov, Greene, Murray, Benn, Goligoski, Hjalmarsson, Oleksiak, Reilly, or Merrill to a 1-2 year deal.
6c. - Sign one of Landeskog, Coleman, Haula, Saad, or Bonino. (Coleman/Saad 4 years max, Haula/Bonino 2 years max)
6d. - Sign Grubauer, Bernier, Ullmark, or Mrazek. (Maximum 2 years)

For the sake of this mock offseason:
1. Bastian to Seattle
2. Luke Hughes drafted
3. Garland acquired for 28th overall, Kuokkanen, Okhotyuk, and Butcher
4. Butcher included in trade for Garland
5. Henrique acquired and Devils gain a mid round pick in 2022 draft
6a. Devils land Hamilton
6b. Devils land Kulikov
6c. Devils land Coleman
6d. Devils land Bernier

Here's your 2021-22 New Jersey Devils:
Zacha - Hischier - Bratt
Sharangovich - Hughes - Holtz
Coleman - Henrique - Garland
Wood - McLeod - Johnsson

Graves - Hamilton
Smith - Severson
Siegenthaler - Subban

Blackwood
Bernier

Extras: Kulikov, Foote, Boqvist

I understand not wanting to lose Bastian or hoping that Seattle had picked someone else, but I think in a short term outlook this is probably for the best. Especially the fact that we’re keeping Subban. I understand he may only be worth two million a season and he’s making 9, but going into this free agency needing two right handed defenseman was going to be a tall order to fill. Now, all you need to do is find someone for your first or second pairing, and you’ll have Subban for your third pairing, and he can certainly handle that responsibility.

I will miss Bastian just because I loved the Mississauga boys.

I don't think losing Bastian was for the best at all, however I do agree with your reasoning on losing Subban to Seattle. However, losing Butcher or Johnsson would've been much better than losing Bastian.

If I'm Tom Fitzgerald, I'm calling Seattle right now and offering Butcher or Johnsson at 50% retained AND Merkley for Bastian back.

Bastian's style of play is something that this team needs more of. Not less. Losing Bastian hurts in both the short term and long term. However, finding guys similar to him are quite easy. Finding someone similar to him that has the same chemistry with McLeod that he had, will not be as easy.

Why would we sign Kulikov to make him an extra?

I have no interest in Henrique unless it's half retained

i don't think you can do that. i'm not sure, but i think the idea of selecting someone and trading them back immediately was brought up with price and the league said (via lebrun or someone) that was a clear violation of the cba. it's not clear to me given the other shit they let fly, but what do i know

That was with the assumption they traded him back with salary retention. Bastian getting traded back wouldn't have salary retention.

Because after the Mueller experiment, I don't have faith in Siegenthaler being a capable NHL defenseman.

It would come with a sweetener such as a 2nd round pick.
I don't blame you...but then why not call Siegenthaler the extra :)

I have Boqvist pretty firmly locked in to start the season as the 3/4(however you want to rank he and McLeod) center.

Sounds like we need 2 right wings now though. Potential top liner if possible. Zetterlund could be a bottom 6'r.

Because I doubt Ruff would scratch Siegenthaler after they just
A. traded a 3rd round pick for him
B. Protected him in expansion
C. Have said they believe he can be a top 4 defenseman
So then you acknowledge he will start the season in the lineup.

I'm OK with it. He likely won't be terrible. And we have a ton of guys on the horizon.

Agreed. Hopefully a veteran LHD (Kulikov) is signed, and then on the left side for next season you have Smith, Graves, Siegenthaler, Kulikov, Bahl, and Okhotyuk battling for 3 spots. (4 spots if one moves over to play the right side)

I agree with some of what you’d like to see. Hamilton and one of the goalies you listed ( few other good options out there too)
However I’m not sure what to think about Henrique. I’d prefer to have someone that is good on the PK to be out 3c . Wennberg would be nice and to me is a slightly better option than Henrique.
Also I don’t think Coleman is needed. I love him as a player but he is going to get paid $$$ . We don’t need to spend that much on a third line winger. Holtz is still a year away and I’d like to have some security and known commodity like Tarasenko or like you list Garland ( or both) . It doesn’t place pressure on Holtz then to produce right away and gives Hughes a sniper to help him develop and gain confidence.

Henrique is fantastic on the PK what do you mean??

I think Coleman's work ethic is infectious and is a tremendous example for the rest of the team. Which is why I would love him back.

I don't think Boqvist is good enough to be in the lineup personally.
