and if yzerman would have spent more future cap on better ufa the team would have gotten into playoffs past few years to do nothing . lessening his draft spot and future cap space , all at the cost of future success . but many fans are too dense to figure that out and choose to get their kicks by yzer'bashing . too dense to figure out that more expensive ufa signings would have created a problem when signing sides n rayz . also too dense to realize yzerman obviously proved he knew what he was doing in tbay during a dynasty run via drafting n trading , the only thing slowed tbay down was the cap caused them to lose important depth players . how fans can sit here ignoring what yzer did in tbay then the 1st round draft pix he keeps rocking in detroit and bash him is ridiculous . not to mention the absolute all time shambles detroits depth chart was in when he took over , people prove their stupidity by not realizing a depth chart that gone takes minimum 6 or 7 years to rebuild because the hockey talent pool on earth isnt very deep as theres fewer athletes earth wide playing this cold weather sport ! mean while people can play baseball , football , bball world wide near 12 month out of year so theres more good players to draft in other sports so rebuilds happen quicker . mean while guys like asp/cossa/buchnelnikov/finnie/lombardi/augustine are doing great but of course the bashers dont reconize that

You can spend your money and time the way you want. But the way Yzerman is building this team is exactly the way I would do it. I can relate to his rebuild. I see the light at the end of the tunnel, you probably see fire and brimstone.

Actually, as I said before, I hope that the exalted "kids" turn out to be the NHL's best young group of players ever assembled. But for now, that's all they are - kids who have no experience, and who are nothing but Yzerman's job security that allow him to say "sure, my FA signings have been horrible, but just wait for the kids to show up!"

You're right, Yzerman could build a contender for the next 2 years if he mortgaged the entire foreseeable future. I am sure he could trade all his 1st rounder until 2027 and trade ASP, MBN, Cossa, Edvinsson, Kasper, Danielsson, etc and get some nice pieces who are on wrong side of their prime.

Actually, he could have been smarter with his free-agent signings and not signed Holland-esque contracts to players like Andrew Copp and J.T. Compher, a combined $11 million dollars for something like 4 points in the last combined 40 games.

But that would get me on the "fire Yzerman" bandwagon. As a paying client, I enjoy watching the progress of the prospects as the team improves each season. I enjoy watching Seider and Raymond win and nearly win the calder. I enjoy seeing Edvinsson become something special. I enjoyed watching Cossa come in a losing game and walk away with the win.

I'm not on the "fire Yzerman" bandwagon (I'm 1,00000% on the fire Lalonde bandwagon). But it's not unreasonable to say at the very least, he's been wholly underwhelming.

My guess is that's just who you are on a daily basis. I bet you're real fun at parties!

When I first saw this mentioned, I found it more than a bit eye-opening, and looked into it a bit further.

I don't know if Chris is or isn't the head of pre-scouting, but the website lists him as one of several pro scouts. I keep seeing where he is the head of pro scouting, but I am not sure what the source of this is.

According to a Ken Campbell tweet Chris replaced a well respected scout in Glen Merkosky, I don't know if he was then head of pro scouting or not.

Chris Y. has worked in Tampa Bay and apparently had a good reputation. I can't find where I read it but saw something stating he started in amateur scouting, then moved to pro-side (in Tampa).

Make of it what you want. Recent UFA signings have been underwhelming for sure. The Copp, Compher and even Chiraot signings at least filled needed roles with respected vets without setting future salary and term structures out of wack.

On the other hand letting Gostisbehere walk over an additional million and 3yr vs 2yr compared to Gustafsson when you knew you were going to dump Walman has left a gaping hole on the back end.

One thing SY did very well in Tampa was fix his problems and mistakes. Drouin, St. Louis. The Lecavalier buyout may be near SOP today's standards, but at the time was eye-opening and considered by some even ruthless. He juggled around a bit with goalies until hitting on Bishop then Vasilevskiy.

You know how is it obvious you have no clue about DRWs? The fact you think Yzerman leaks anything. Love it/Hate it.... Yzerman leaks nothing. He gives interviews and you can hear what he's saying, only when asked the right questions.

The source I have is what Yzerman said during interviews, and I am not digging through 5 years of audio interviews! He said it's going to be a rebuild through the draft. Then you go online and look at when placeholder contracts expire. It's pretty simple basic common sense stuff right there!

My understanding is Stevie's brother was responsible in Tampa and found guys like Tyler Johnson, Sergachev, etc.

If losing for a better draft position is part of the plan, then wouldn't that be "helping the Wings"?

Not firing Laldone proves Yzerman is fine with the team not winning. I haven't been following the upcoming draft, but my understanding is there isn't much of a talent difference in the top 8 or so across the board. Maybe top 8 sounds delicious to him.

I think if they can get someone like Michael Misa this year, and then sign a guy like Ehlers in the offseason + trade for a competent top 4 dman like Hague, they can enter next year with a lineup like:

Misa-Larkin-Raymond
Ehlers-Kasper-DeBrincat
Compher-Danielson-Tarasenko
Mazur-Copp-Rasmussen

Edvinsson-Seider
Hague-ASP
bottom pairing

Cossa/Lyon tandem in net.

That team could see a big jump in the standings next year. A top pick this year would be a huge thing for this rebuild.
